1984 C10 4.1L valve cover gasket, I am confused
« on: October 09, 2014, 06:38:13 PM »
OK, went to AutoZone for a valve cover gasket and the picture they showed me doesn't look like the one I need.  Do you go for it and trim the extra off?  This is the first valve cover on an I-6 I've done in a very VERY long time and I remember it being on the non-integral head.

http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Felpro-Valve-Cover-Gasket/1984-Chevrolet-C10-1-2-ton-P-U-2WD/_/N-ik2xdZaliz0?itemIdentifier=67205_995323_2034_

I what it says I need but the bottom part of it isn't part of the gasket, it is more like the old style.

What say you???

That gasket is for the 1979 forward integral head 250 (5 bolt holes along the straight side).

The 1978 & prior non-integral head 250 had 3 bolt holes along the straight side (Fel-Pro #VS 13173-1).

Thing is BD, I have the 5 bolts on the left side, I just don't have the extra stuff on the right, do you just cut it off?

As long as e/g else looks correct, that is what I would do.

I think I remember a valve cover gasket like the one is showing on the first integral headed I-6's which I thought they all still were that way.  Gasket is only $10 so it isn't the end of the world if I cut it and it doesn't work

Or... you could use a good chemical gasket.  Once you pull the valve cover off, whether it will work or not should be evident.  Wait until you get it apart before cutting.

I will pick up one tomorrow when I am out, small leak but more importantly I want to snug up the rocker arms, I have at least one really noisy one...

Thanks for the reply!!!  I really appreciate it.
