Dual fuel tank truck with a bed that only has 1 fuel door
« on: July 17, 2020, 09:11:08 AM »
Hello,

Recently began a project on an 86 k30 6.2L diesel that was a cab and chassis sale. The truck spent its life as a service truck with a utility body at a volunteer fire department west of green bay. I am doing a full restore on the truck and recently picked up a fleetside bed to put on the chassis.

The truck has dual fuel tanks and a switcher inside the cab.

Problem: the bed i am putting on the truck is for a single tank fuel door on the drivers side.

I'm sure im not the first person to come across this. I wanted to get some ideas/advice on how or what people recommended.

The bed is in great shape and i would really like to avoid cutting into it and welding in another fuel door.

Things  considered:

Remove tank...
Plumb the two tanks together and separate them with a ball valve from underneath...
Mounting the fuel filler neck inside the bed to access it....

Any ideas or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Find a 77-78 round hole filler tube.  That is what was done to this 85 when the previous owner wanted a 2nd tank

A bigger concern to me is if the wheel base is the 135" cab and chassis.  If it is you are going to have a big gap between cab and bed

Another idea would be to put a high volume transfer pump from the driver side to the passenger side and just flip switch when you fill up then off when you see your gauge come close to full.
