i have a np203 that came off a standard transmission, is it possible to change the adapter and bolt it to a th400? if so is the adapter oem or do i need an aftermarket part?

I'd assume you could nab an adapter off of a auto-tranny NP203, but then that's with my knowledge.

You can change adapters easy enough, the problem is with the in put shaft.  The t-case is setup for a manual meaning at it has a 10 spline input where as the TH400 you want to mount it to has a 32 spline output shaft.  These two will not work together.  You will need to go find a t-case from a TH400.

yes, that was the first thing i looked at but output shaft on the standard does have 32 splines and is the same diameter.

Hmmm, Other than the NV3500 or NV4500 i dont know of any other manual transmissions that would mount up to a chevy NP203.  But in any case i would say that your next step is to find an adapter that will fit the bolt pattern on the tranny.  Be careful of the shaft lengths and such.  If the adapter looks like it will fit, but the tranny output shaft is a bit too long you may crack a housing putting it together.  What are you doing with this project (i.e. what did you get the transfer case from)?  Im interested in the out come, let me know how this goes.
