87 305 tbi motor?
« on: September 27, 2006, 09:48:00 PM »
I am currently looking at a 1987 gmc fullsize truck. It has a 305 with tbi on it. I owned a 90 gmc sierra before, so i am somewhat new to the 73-87 bodystyle. What all is required to get rid of the tbi unit and put a carb in its place? If i get the truck, my plans will be to swap out the 305 for a 350 later on and i would like to run a carb instead of the crappy tbi.

You would definitely be going backwards if you went from a TBI to a crappy carb, in my opinion.  The TBI is going be give you better gas mileage, startup and drivability.

If you really want to get rid of it, just pull out all of the wiring going to the TBI, ECM etc and get a complete running Carb'd motor.

The '87 engines were identical to those used in 88-93.

I couldn't agree more.I've had it with carbs. The reason I've stayed away from the new stuff is not understanding how it works.

I'm going with TPI on my next engine.
