I finally decided to set the initial timing by using the vacuum guage today. I got it to the highest vacuum number and then retarded it just a bit. Doing it this way completely fixed the issues I was having, as well as gave it a TON more power. The truck is about twice as fast as it used to be, night and day difference. I believe the explanation to the problem is not my timing light, but rather the harmonic balancer. The crate engine i bought was supposed to be an 80's engine, but i bought a harmonic valacer for a 75 truck because thats what year the truck is. I didn't realize they were different until now. Now I need to figure out how many degrees off the older harmonic balancers are from the new ones. Or just buy the right one.

Is it possible your fuel bypass is plugged up.? That would force more fuel into the carburetor. Depending on where you are taking the pressure test at, it would cause higher pressure too. I believe pressure should be about 6 .
