Title: Wire Question
Post by: Jstan78 on August 12, 2012, 06:32:08 PM
Ok, I have a 1978 K-10, 350, short bed , and i found this wire just hanging out under the dash. I was hoping someone could enlighten  me on where it is suppost to go? It apperas to have a staple sticking out on the one end. when i unplug the solid purple wire the truck gets power, but will not turnover, until i plug it back in. So does anyone know why this Staple (unknow) would be stuck in the end, and shouldnt it be pluged in somewhere? Thanks for advice in advance.

Welcome to the site! Does your truck start in any gear if the wires are both hooked up? My thought is it's the neutral safety switch wires & they are using the "staple" as a jumper to bypass the switch. The switch should be on the bottom of the column. The only thing that makes me question my thinking is that I'm pretty sure my '78 had light & dark Green wires on the switch. Hope this helps, Lorne

Thanks, Yes it starts in any gear, I read a post earlier discussing reverse lights (because mine are not working) after reading that i was looking at the neutral safety switch, and noticed there were several things not hooked up to it along with the adjustment seems to be missing. So if i install a new switch, i should be able to remove the staple and plug it in, is that correct?

That is the neutral safety or the clutch safety plug. It should plug into the back up neutral safety switch on top of the column. Or if your truck is a manual trans it plugs into the clutch pedal switch.

You posted while I was typing. The switch is probably bad thats why someone bypassed it. Replace the switch and you should be good to go.
