Title: The Wife's 88 CrewCab Makeover
Post by: rhino on January 23, 2013, 08:12:35 AM
The wife has always loved trucks especially the square bodies. She has told me on several occasions that she wanted me to build her one. This is that build. were Gonna cut the frame and convert it into a short bed, add 4 wheel disc brakes. Where gonna do all the body work and paint it right here in my garage. Install 03 Tahoe power leather seats, custom stereo, Rebuild the 5.7 and Im gonna try my first trans rebuild on a 700r4 and Im sure other things along the way. The truck is about 60-70% done now and I will post lots of pictures till you guys are caught up with the build. I do have a build thread going on the other forum as well in case some of you have seen this movie already. Please feel free to ask any questions along the way.

The truck started as a tan 88 1 ton crew cab long bed. It was a plain old work truck, rubber floor, two ratty tore up bench seats, hand crank windows, manual locks, non A/C 5.7 with a leaky th400. it rode like a log truck and not very cool, oh and a lift gate the kids rode like a carnival ride. needs less to say its not what the wife had envisioned has her dream truck. but she drove it any way. up until a little over a year ago. Thats when I put it in the garage and tore it apart.

I first started on ripping out the rear bench seat and tring to install the rear seats from the Tahoe. it took awhile lots of thinking which is hard for me. I wanted to keep the seats ablity to fold down. to this day im not sure why but thats what i did. I cut the Tahoes seat apart taking car to retain the piviot points and cables and then welded mounting points to the floor of the truck so everything would bolt into place. Now the seats fold up and down and will unbolt and come out fairly easy.

The truck came with lap belts in the rear and i wanted to up grade to the shoulder belts. heres how that went down.

I then grinded the welds down. Im going to install all the plastic trim so all my ugly welds wont show.

I start on the front seats next.

How did you get the bracket you made for the shoulder harness behind the post ?  I will be following this thread closely.  I have always wanted to build a crew cab 4 x4 and make it into a short bed.

dropped a string down the hole then tied string around it with a smaller bolt in it and pulled it up. when i go it up I held it tight to the c-piller and then put a tac weld in each corner.

The front seats wern't quite as easy.  with the hump in the floor it sat to high. Im not very tall and my head was almost hitting the ceiling. so I had to cut out some of the floor.

cit the mounting tabs off the Tahoe seats so they would sit flush

I tried to precise and calculating when marking where the floor should be cut, but in the end i gave up and just cut it where it look like it needed cut. I cut out about a 1.5 inches flattened out the top of the hump then cut the piece in half then welded it back to the floor.

I did the passenger side a little bit different. Ill show you that and the bracing

On the passenger side instead of cutting a pie section out I cut the whole top off.  then put it on the floor and then beat the shoot out it until it was as flat as I could get it. Cut it to the shape I needed. Then welded it back on.
I think it worked out better this way.  Now the seats are sitting at the right ride height and should have plenty of back and forth travel.

I used some 3/16 steel plate to tie the floor together and make a nice flat surface for the seats to sit on.

and put seam sealer on all the welds

I was wondering if you were going to reinforce those areas in case of say a accident.  Glad to see the safety was thought ahead.

Yea supporting it and making it strong was always a top priority. I far from being a engineer, so I tried my best to give it the structural integrity it needs. I will fasten the seats down with 7/16 hardened bolts through steel plates under the floor that  run  perpendicular to the ones above.

with all seats mounted and bolted in, we all gave the a test ride. they are very comfortable and offer decent room in the back. as you can see in the pic. my wife and son (who btw is almost 6" tall and pushing 265) have plenty of room.

Thanks. where abouts in Ohio? I still have them.

After I tackled the floor, I moved on to the brakes suspension and chassis. I started with the front. Completely gutting the front end. putting in new Ball joints, bushings, springs, Brakes, calipers Cleaning and Re-packing the bearings with Amsoil grease. I freshened up the steering  with newt tie-rods,  center link, idler arm Pitman arm, a new P/S gearbox. Then finished off with a new set of wheels.

Until I get my Brookville roadster. I guess Ill keep going on the crew cab.  After doing the front I went to the rear. After taking off those heavy Im heavy Drum brakes from the 14 bolt. I swap them out for a set of disc brakes. I bought caliper brackets from a offroad website.
I put on new calipers pads and rotors from a 78 k20. I made my own Brake hose brackets and put in new bearings and seals in the full floating hub. I was contemplation installing new 3.:73 gears But in the end decide to keep the 4:11 that were already in there. while I had it apart I installed new carrier bearing and pinion bearings and seal. Then added Amsoil Gear lube

At this point in the build me and the wife were debating back and forth weather or not to make the truck a shortbed. I always knew it would look cool, make the turning radius a little smaller And then it would then fit in the garage. but just barley. I wasn't sure I wanted to add on the extra work and I cant say for sure but I think the wife didnt want me to do it cause she probably would mess it up. So we or I agreed that if I could find a short bed before I started anybody work I would do it. A few weeks later I found one and The next day found a buyer for my rust free longbed.

Once the bed was removed I started measuring where and how much to cut. I knew that 14 inches needed to come out and the 6" need to be cut of the back. But I wanted the short bed to drop right on without drilling new holes. so it took a little planning to make that happen. I marked the frame and cut it with a cut off wheel.

Had my clean up the edges. I have a little 110 welder And I knew that was not going to get the job done so I rented this big pull behind welder and welded it back together. I took the 14" piece I removed and cut some of it in to a diamond and welded that to the inside of the frame.

I coated the frame & weld on both sides with KBS coatings. Then I took the remaining piece of removed scrap and used it as a reinforcing plate and drilled and bolted it to the side, top and bottom of the frame where it had been welded. so it is welded with a fish plate and bolted on all three sides.

I removed the 20 gallon tank and added the 16 gallon. I cleaned it up on the inside and put in a new pump and mounted it back in place.

After the frame was shortened. I needed to get the drive shaft shortened.

once the truck could move under its own power again, we took it outside and washed some of the grime and dirt off and then my wife and daughter started coating the rear half of the frame

Thats an awsome truck, nice progress so far. I bet its alot cheaper to do that then buy a new truck, these are much better built anyways. Like the the use of newer seats nice upgrade. Keep up the good work.

umm, i think comparing a used "home built" truck to a new truck is like comparing apples to oranges... there are a lot of benefits in buying a new truck... that include fuel efficiency, safety in brakes and air bags... and you are guaranteed not to be left on the side of the road... on the other hand new trucks are 40k+.. its nice to have an old truck or car and work on it and drive it, and be able to say i built it...

It maybe cheaper, but it sure in the heck isn't  easier. Im doing wiring now. It is a nightmare under that dash. Iv tried to keep it organized the best I can, but it still looks like a cobbled up mess. there is just so many wires. its hard to keep it straight.  Iv been Putting in new interior lighting, power windows, power locks, keyless entry, alarm, remote start, auto-dimming mirror with compass and temp, Double din dvd/nav stereo, backup camera. powered subs, and probably a few more before im done.

Nothing's guaranteed, but your right.   I love the old trucks, Anybody can go and sign there name for a new truck, and be like all the other newer trucks on the road. Just driving a old truck says something about you. I used to drive newer trucks about 8-10 years ago now, I just like the way I feel in a old truck. I dont know how to explain how i feel. I just feel better about myself knowing I dont need that big expensive truck. and thats when I drive my old 86 POS. When I would drive my 71 before i sold it. OMG there is almost no better feeling for me. I loved building that truck. Driving this one around will be just as satisfying, and see my wife drive it around. I probably wont be able to stop grinning.

Did you use all three steps of the KBS coatings system?  If you had a media blasted frame, could you just get away with the topcoat?

It looks great!!

Yea I just used the top coat. When I did the 71 I started with a blasted frame. here is the build thread. first page has the KBS coatings

On the crew cab I just cleaned it with dish soap and brush knock of dirt. either way seamed to work fine for me.

At this point in the build, I brought the whole family out again and we started scuffing the inside for paint and sound deadener.
I also Mocked up and drilled holes for the interior plastic, that we picked up from the junk yards. I wanted grab handles as well, so I marked where I wanted them and drilled holes and then welded in a locking nut.

I like the handle idea, I just bought a set of them and were going to weld in the nuts like you did after winter (too darn cold to work here when you do not have a garage to work in).

I took the old steering column out and replaced it with a newer with tilt, delayed wiper/ cruise control. plus it has the newer GMC wheel.  We picked it up from the junk yard, and when i got it in, I noticed the thing was all wobbly. So I took it apart and fixed it. Then I painted and cleared the  dash, back wall and inside the door and jambs. Then laid down some sound deadener (which I sell by the way.) Then I took the  A/C system from a donor truck. and installed that into the crew.  I didnt know this at the time but A/C cabs are different from non A/C cabs. I Had to cut in some new holes and patch up some old ones.  While I was doing that The wife got started Sanding on her truck with a DA, getting ready for paint.

Glad to have you here rhino. I came across your Silver Dollar build thread while doing some searching for paint colors. I kept going back to check your progress. You did a great job on that one and I'm sure this one will be no different.

Best part is the involvement of the whole family.

Thanks,  Its good to be here.  Its nice having the whole family join in.(most of the time) Deb's getting more involved in this one. Since its her truck she better. I told her, she is putting the engine together.  :o   That should be interesting, considering she got mad at me just yesterday. I saw her trying to start a crooked bolt with the ratchet.  Apparently, I stopped her in a harsh and condescending way.  (My bad) ::)

5 long months of body work, in a few short days

We started by prepping the body. Sanded and checking for any imperfection, then a good cleaning cleaning to remove any containment's.

I replaced the driver door. It was full of filler from a large dent. and I replaced the right front fender, it had some damage as well.

Then I shot it with 2 coats SPI black epoxy primer. No need for guide coat with this epoxy. The primer dries to a nice semi-gloss black. and you can perfectly see any imperfections when sanded.

once it was sanded and all low and high spots were revealed. I started in with the filler. Rage Extream was my choice. very little shrinkage and sands easy.

This has got to be the best pic yet. After blocking out old blue I knew I wasn't a paint and body guy. There's not better way to appreciate something than to be involved in building it. I had to get a new military id shortly after blocking the truck but the scanner couldn't find my finger prints so I looked at my fingers and realized it was because I had none...

I sure hope at least one of my four will enjoy hitting the wrenches with old dad.

Oh, Waiting for more pic's....and the Dana 60..

The wife helped me sand a few days. I left the tailgate and the hood to her. so if there not straight.  She did it.

after sanding the filler, I shot some more epoxy primer on the truck. You can still see where all the filler work was done.  The filler soaked up the epoxy like a sponge. but thats ok.

Then I laid down two coats of Feather fill. (Gray polyester primer) The feather fill is thick and helps fill in the small imperfections kinda like a skim coat of body filler.

Then some sanding and more sanding. I sprayed on some guide coat. then did some more sanding.  I used dura-blocks 16" 11" and a tear drop block for the curves.

As I was sanding I would put little pieces of tape on spots that I found that need just a little more filler.

After all the Feather fill was sanded and all the little things fixed, I sprayed on another round of epoxy. At this point The truck should be nice a straight. But Its time again for some more sanding. this time with 400.  Even suckered my dad into helping.

The sealer & base coat all kinda look the same in these shots, but you defiantly can tell when the clear is put on.

Looks awesome!! I can't wait to see it all back together. I've always wanted one of those but 4x4. Chances of finding one in my area with minimal rust is very slim.
Great family build...

Thanks guys. Well as nice as it was Im one who cant leave well enough alone. The clear laid down real smooth and not a run anywhere. It had a little trash it from painting in a dirty garage but for the most part it looked good. But i wanted more. So I sanded it down with 600 and was Planning on shooting on 2 more coats of clear and calling it done.   Im not sure exactly changed, air pressure, temperture, gun settings or what, but I ran the next coat. It look good coming out of the gun, but after a few minutes it started to get "gravity indicators"  and a bunch of them. I ran the clear on every panel but one. I was trying to get away with out cutting and buffing but that didnt work out so well. so I began Sanding and scrapping all the runs. it took forever. I think in total I sanded this whole truck 12 times. but in the end it turned out pretty nice.

Hey Rhino,
How much of the KBS Blacktop did it take to coat your frame?  I'm getting ready to order some, but don't want to get too much, that stuff is pricey!! :o

Why can't I see your pics

The most recent pics were posted in 2013.  A few months ago, Photobucket (a third party hosting "service") went rogue and started holding customer pictures hostage.  The problem is Internet wide.
