Question about front axle shaft and leaks
« on: June 20, 2002, 09:21:00 PM »
I replaced the seals today and the passenger side is still leaking, I guess because the axle shaft is worn where it meets the seal.  Any other possible reason?

Randy's R&P wants $45.50 for just the shaft.  The outer stub's good but I'm gonna need the u-joint too.  Does that sound like a deal, should I call around locally, or is there somewhere online with better prices?

Are you sure it isn't just residue seeping from the axle tube? was there a groove in the axle?

Oh my God, you might be exactly right!  I was so tired after I finished that as soon as I saw it running down the inside of the tire again I didn't even think twice.  I'll check it out and post the results, I think there's a good chance you're guessing correct.

Unfortunately no.  Randy's R&P wants like $55 for just the shaft.  Local they want $125.

hmmm, I'd check to make sure the seal is installed properly, if there is no groove in the shaft and the seal slides on there nice and clean, maybe it's just not in right. Did you lube the lip of the seal with some new grease or oil b4 you installed it? Did you apply any sealer around the exterior surface?

Dell - It's in there right.  The seal fits really tightly, it's pretty impossible to install it wrong.  A bad seal is possible I guess...  Did lube the contact area, didn't add any sealer.

Chad - I know man, it sucks!  I guess I just can't have nice things.  Heh heh.
