Title: ss 454 rear end swap
Post by: 07montecarlo on June 07, 2009, 05:51:12 AM
first post here,so hello to all fellow bowtie lovers!!!!
has anyone ever done a 14 bolt 5 lug ss454 rear axle swap into a 73-87?friend has one with low miles for $400.00,figured it would be cheaper than rebuilding the stock 12'er into a 4:11
gear and new limited slip carrier..from my understanding the ss454 came with a 4:11 gearset, and if wrong maybe someone can correct me....thanx

Anything is possible but there is fabrication involved. You need to move the spring perches, probably the shock mounts?

Never personally done it but I'm pretty sure they came with 3.73's

The early 454SS trucks came with 3.73 because they had the 3 speed automatic
The 4L80E trucks came with 4.10's

I was gonna do the swap on the Stepside
but the SS rear is too narrow for a stepside bed
I did not want to get new wheels
as a reminder the SS lug studs are Metric.

It's gonna take some cutting/welding to get it in
And you are gonna have to do something with the U-joint, as the SS yoke is huge.
The pinion spline is the same size as the 10 bolt
But the outer (seal area) diameter is larger on the SS, If you use a 10 bolt yoke the pinion seal will leak like a waterfall.
