On the Road Again
« on: September 13, 2020, 11:54:40 AM »
The Geezer is finally on the road again after almost 2 years of driveway rework. Sure is satisfying to be able to use it again. We have owned this since 1978, it’s hauled all the materials to build our home, garage, and barn including dragging in the 50’ oak floor beams from our wood lot. 56K on the odometer that has rolled over 5 times, yes it has been rebuilt several times. 350 + .060, TH350 with the good stuff,  NP203, Dana44 & GM 14 bolt, Yukon rear locker with 4.10’s. All rebuilt running gear, new ball joints, steering parts, wheel bearings, drive shafts, the whole enchilada.

Sure like the old stainless parts these trucks were made with, I buffed those mirrors about 25 years ago, just wash them & they still sparkle, by the way, those mirrors are heated.

Had Line-X do the bed liner last week, hope it holds up as advertised, this bed came from Oklahoma with no rust, 1 small scrape/dent on the driver side, above the fender lip. Bed wasn’t beat up on the inside, several small dents that I didn’t bother to bump out. Tailgate is original GMC probably early 1980’s, with bolt on hinge pivots.

Texas cab was in pretty good condition as well, used 3 Go-Jo hand wipes for about ½ hour to clean the bottom. A little rust prevention at the inside cab corner was about all it needed.

Titled as 1977 3/4 Ton Sierra Grande 25.
All springs replaced as when we got it in 1978. 9 leaf rear.

Front springs also set-up as when purchased, bundle of 5. Yes that is a 75 grill found in a corner of the garage, not cracked & I like the look. Not even sure where it came from, glad to be a pack-rat this time.

Dual Fuel Tank Select Display:
Years ago (in the time of pay phones) my brother borrowed the Geezer to haul something. Fuel got low; He filled it up and ran it dry a couple miles later. Forgot about the dual tanks I had told him about. After that I added a selected tank display into the dash. Don’t have to remember which switch direction connects to which tank. The lettering on the switch bezel is not really conveniently placed for nighttime viewing either.
Redid the circuit during this rebuild & took some pictures if anyone is interested. Circuit in speedo pocket.

Thank You,

Got new 304 stainless exhaust installed couple of weeks ago, new rear driveshaft, rebuilt the double cardigan joint in the front shaft last week.

Picked up the interior upholstery but this weekend didn't allow time to install that. Got seat rebuilt & they stitched it like the original pattern from 77 and even included the "buckles" on the seat back.

Smack, Jack & Wack Upolstery does nice work. They are just north of Morgantown WV.

Here is a shot of the rear turndowns. Pic of why I meeded to get a better seat & the better seat waiting for some extra time from me to get it out of the van into it's proper place.

A better pic of the rear exhaust, mufflers are actually chambered, not straight thru. They will talk to you when into the loud pedal, lets you know it is running but not loud, doesn't drone going down the road. Brought it home the other day, wife didn't hear me coming for a change.
