Diesel or Gas swap
« on: December 04, 2016, 04:35:15 PM »
Hey guys! So I'm having a dilemma here. So I want too see people's opinions and I need some help. I'm gonna be building my 85 chevy k10 from the frame up. What I have on it right now is just a 4inch lift and 38s just on the frame. But instead of putting a 350 in it. I wanted to put a diesel in it like a 6.2 or a 12v cummins. So how much more is involved in this swap and what do I need to change/add to it.

for the 6.2, not much, depending on transmission, should be pretty much bolt up, re-route a couple wires for power, and done, if you want to turbo the 6.2 or even drop in a 6.5, you will need to custom make a crossover and down-pipe...that is it. Take a look here, I am almost done with my truck, swapped out the 305, with a 1997 6.5 TD, converted to mechanical injection. I also ditched the 700r4 and installed a SM465, hopefully next year I can find a NV4500.

for the Cummins, your looking at bell-housing adapters, engine mount adapters, possible other clearance issues with cab and radiator, custom exhaust. I think the engine cross-member needs to be tweaked as well to fit the Cummins oil pan. I'm not real positive on Cummins swap stuff.

we do have a cummins swap section now also. ive done 1 swap on my crew cab and help a buddy do one on his crew cab. i used the gm motor mounts in their stock location. but this required the trans to be pushed back 3" so new shafts. you want a trans with od or you might only see 55-60 and she wont be liking it.

my buddy is a welder and fabricator and he also has a 13 speed in his truck and he made it 4x4. if i had to do it over again i would get a complete cross member made just for the swap and it utilizes dodge cummins motor mounts and the trans stays in the same spot so dont need new shafts
