Glad to hear you made it home safely.
As far as the brackets, from what I understand the 250 6 cyl brackets will work fine with a sb/bb, its the 292 6 cyl that you run into problems with the brackets.

Yeah, just move the bottom part ahead. The holes are there already. I had a heck of a time till I moved those bottom clamps

Well, since I've been back from Iraq I have put on new leaf springs in the back, bought my new 350, driven the truck 1,400 miles back to Fort Hood, thrown in a floor shifter, plus numerous little things to keep the 250 alive until it becomes musical engine time. Right now I am deciding on whether to keep the 3 speed manual or go for the TH350 automatic. Love power shifting, but like to be lazy with an auto sometimes too.
The best thing about being stationed in the south is all the rust free steel out here!

Ever think about a manual valve body 350? It's like the best of both worlds.

we have pretty rust free trucks up here.. my 84 k5 no rust nowhere

Layne, it was originally a column shift, but I put in a Hurst floor shifter. You know, nobody makes a decent 3 speed floor shifter for these or any truck. They either hit the seat, dash, or are way too short. I wonder why?

I have a floor shift in my stepside with no issues and it's not a ratchet shifter

I was going to convert mine to a floor shift, too. But this 700 was calling my name, and I like built autos better. I do enjoy my ratchet shifter too

Yup, I'm going to stick with my 3 speed Saginaw for a while. The prices for even a used and abused 4 speed are crazy. By the way, I am very annoyed with the floor shifter and I'm thinking of bending my own custom shifter stick out of a steel rod that they sell at hardware stores.
The shifting mechanism= good, The actual shifter stick= too short, wrong bend, not that great. You'd think a company like Hurst would have a decent stick for the very popular '73-'87 Chevrolets. Not yet.

so what your saying is that the 292 brackets are different from 350 ones?

i have what i believe is a 4 speed saginaw i got for free when i bought my new motor, the guy said that the 3rd gear synchronizer was going up on it but im not sure. ill get rid of it for cheap if your interested, its taking up room in my garage

Yeah...the 292 frame brackets don't work because the are staggered. By the way, the 292 is wicked awesome. In a weird way I kind of wish I had bought a crate 292 instead of my 350. Just for the cool factor. Simplicity as well.
