Exhaust Tubing Size?
« on: July 31, 2008, 11:12:52 AM »
Hey guys... my truck is a '73 with the stock 350/350 setup. I'm looking into getting a new exhaust system installed as the original one has some serious leaks. I'm thinking of going with front to back dual exhaust, with an x-pipe, and 36" glasspacks. What I'm not sure about is the tubing size. What is the recommended tubing size for my setup and what are some of the advantages and disadvantages?

I would invest in a little better muffler than glasspacks. They have a very short life span before they start to become noisy and annoying. They usually sound pretty cool when new but a nicer muffler for yourt nice new exhaust would be a good investment.

For your set up if it's a daily driver the 2.25 might be a little more responsive. The 2.5 will flow better overall though.

I had my exhaust re-ran on my '82 bout a month ago, I can post pics if you want,  I have longtubes with a 2½ dual exhaust with a 2" H pipe to balance the flow out with Super 40 Flowmasters, I'm very happy with it, and I can't wait to get the Vortecs, cam, and edelbrock on there to really open my truck up.

82Shortbed-

Do you have a sound bite of your setup? I would be interested in hearing how this sounds. Thanks.

I can make you one if you want me to!  Sadly, It'd probably be cell phone quality though, but I can try!  PM me or reply on this forum if you want.

Hey... I'll take what I can get! I've searched so much I think I hit the end of the Internet. You can find motorcycle sound bites all over the place... but cars/trucks is another thing.

You don't need an H pipe to be the same diameter as the exhaust. It's job is to equalize backpressure.

Exhaust pulses happen at different times right? If you wanted better flowing exhaust you need to put larger exhaust on your machine. That's not the purpose of the H pipe. I always use a smaller diameter pipe for my H pipes. Regardless of RPM it serves the same purpose.

my 28" glasspacks are 3+ years old and have not blown out yet...longer packs last a lot longer, especially on a stock engine..

Here's my H, and a pic of my super 40s, I like how the exhaust looks, and you can see it when the trucks parked coming off the headers.
