Trans difference
« on: June 18, 2009, 10:56:36 PM »
I am looking at getting a 76 Suburban that is a 4x4 to pull the engine/trans out of to use in a 2 wheel drive car, is there a difference for how the trans bolts in to the trans mount if the transfer case is removed?  I read somewhere that the 4 wheel drive has a longer tail shaft but can't find the information again.  I am assuming it would be a T350 trans for this year as the engine is a 350.

Any help would be appreciated

A 4 wheel drive trans will not work in a two wheel drive car or truck unless you change the out put shaft to a 2 wheel drive one, and bolt a tail shaft housing on. In order to change the out put shaft you need to completely disassemble the transmission. At that point you might as well rebuild it. Or just get the correct transmission to be gin with. If the Burb is 1/2 ton it would most likely be a TH350. If its 3/4 ton it is probably a TH400.
