6.2 backed with a turbo 400 dual cooler anyone else have this?
« on: February 04, 2015, 10:04:42 PM »
I'm redoing a 6.2 and the turbo 400 has the cooler in the radiator and an additional cooler fun style in front of the radiator. I was wondering who else is running this set up and a little more info would be great about it. Should I keep it or get rid of it

Very common
Especially if you're towing a lot

Have the same with a 700r4. Very common, nothing to worry about. Worth keeping, just as cheap insurance for the least.

I have a 700r4 that runs trhough the cooler in the radiator then a cooler in front.  It's a nice setup for if you do any kind of loading on the transmission (towing, moving heavy stuff in the bed).

Won't cause any problems, just make sure the flow is going through the radiator first then the cooler before back to the transmission.  The cooler is more efficient that the radiator, thus if you rand through the cooler then through the radiator, you would be heating the fluid back up a little.  Still wouldn't cause an issue, just less efficient.

Timthescarrd has the idea. The idea is that the radiator cooler pre heats the fluid when cold using the hotter temp of the coolant to bring the trans fluid up to temperature, then keep it there. But thats with no external cooler. With the external cooler, the radiator still pre heats the fluid but then the external cooler keeps the fluid at the proper temp with more air flow over it so that the trans won't over heat in heavy load situations. With a 6.2 and the big 400 then it should be a no brainer that the external cooler should stay.

Steel or rubber?

The steel lines you can just flush thoroughly with brake clean or equivalent degreasers or engine solvent.

Check the site store to see if CaptKaos sells anything. If not, both the rubber and steel lines are usually available from the major restoration parts companies or most auto parts stores I think. Should have both the pre bent steel and rubber with fittings.

I don't have a vendor yet, but I use Classictube.com or Inlinetube.com for metal lines.

And your cooler setup is the factory Towing setup.
