I'm trying to help someone find a 70 mustang Boss 302 that they owned in the late 70's - early 80's. The former owner contacted the guy he sold it to in 1985, but that guy sold it after owning it for a short time and that's where the trail ends.
The 11 digit VIN has already been run through the Ma system by local & state police and came up empty. It seems that Ma purges its system of inactive VIN #'s after 10 years.
The former owner also posted some inquiries on some Mustang sites and the Boss 302 registry with no luck.
I tried to run it through Carfax to see if maybe we could get lucky and at least find the last year/state it was registered. As you may know, Carfax only works with vehicles with 17 digit VIN's.
My gut feeling tells me that this car is just sitting in a garage somewhere and hasn't been registered in years.
Any pointers on what the next move should be?

I'm not a ford guy but you gotta love anything with slotted rims.

The ford Marti report was run on the VIN.   It decodes vin numbers on fords. It was done just to make sure that the vin the former owner had was correct and not off by one digit ( like a 0 instead if a o it an I for a 1).
The report came back to a 70 Boss 302, 4 speed, 4.30 gear car with factory louvres, just like he remembered it.

Have you tried VT DMV?  Need to take a road trip to Montpelier to pry anything loose but they will actually have records that far back.

NH and NY don't keep old records and NY will not release em if they had em.

Never tried to find info from ME, CT, or RI.

Went through this in Washington state over an insurance claim.  Really strange information that the other guys insurance company came up with regarding records for my '77 K20.  I called the reporting agency and they said that they did not have any records for my truck and don't have for anything older than 1991.  Insurance company never did explain it.  I stopped short of claiming fraud on the part of the insurance company (I ended up getting the full claim $ amount).  I then called Washington state DMV and they told me they don't have any records on my vehicle either!!!  Said that WA state only keeps records for 5 years and then they get expunged.

Long story short...you are unlikely to find any records on an older vehicle except for the ones the seller has.

And lastly...Carfax really isn't that helpful...unless a repair is done by a reputable shop that reports their work, it won't show up on a Carfax.  It is only helpful for newer cars that have work done under warranty and insurance claims.

Hatzie, you nailed.
The car was found alive & well in VT.
Negotiations are underway to buy it back.
Thank you for your help.
I will type out the story behind this car later (it may be long & booring).
Thank you again for your help.

VT DMV is actually well run and reasonable to work with.  Other states need to use them as a template and get their acts together.
