Squeak, squeak
« on: December 31, 2009, 08:34:19 AM »
Hey guys,  86 C10 1/2 Ton 2WD.

I have developed a "squeak" or "chirp" coming from the front end.  It goes with the speed - faster as the truck goes faster, and vice-versa.  It stops when I apply even a little brake at any speed.  It is more pronounced in curves on the road.

Wheel bearing(s)?  Ball Joints?  Brake related?

Brake pads are worn to the sensors.

Are you sure it's coming from the front end?  Sometimes the mechanical speedometer can be the source of the squeek, mine does it in the winter.  Of course, it increases its frequency with the road speed.  Do a search, there was some discussion of this not too long ago.

But that wouldn't explain why it changes with curves and braking.  So checking out the pads for wear and the rotors for runout and parallelism might not be a bad idea.  Look for pad imprinting (the visible outline of the pad on the rotor).

Oldyellers 81 did that a few years ago and it was the shocks sweaking, if its not the brakes (Id check there first), then check your shocks.

I had something like what you might be describing. It was my speedometer. You could diconnect it and take it for a drive to know for sure. If it is; take the cable out and lube it.

It was my brakes.

I looked through the top of the caliper a few weeks ago, and saw 3/16"-1/4" of pad material left.  I figured that wasn't low, but I guess it was.

I'm a Harley-Davidson Tech, and a brand new pad is 3/16" material.  I wasn't thinking there's about a 4000lb. difference between the two vehicles. :D

Thanks for the replies.
