Front brake rotor thickness K5
« on: October 08, 2011, 06:15:46 AM »
Let my brake pads run a little too low, and they've scored the front rotors. Don't wanna have to replace the rotors/discs if I dont have to, so was thinking about getting them resurfaced.

Anybody know the minimum permitted thickness for the front rotors???

On the inside ( I believe ) on your rotor housing, there will be a stamped "min number" usually 0-0?? that is to be used to tell what the min can be on the rotor.  No matter where you take it to, they will look for that number and then measure it and tell you if they can turn it or not.
If they are with in 0.01" or so and your scoring is deep they might not even try to turn them.

That looks pretty bad, the only way to know for sure is to look for the markings and use a mic and see, of course you are going to have to see how deep the scoring is.  Good luck.

i know when i was at pep boys with a friend we were hanging out in the garage where they wanted to turn down a rotor but they didnt know the specs and had to look it up. i dont know why they would have to look it up if it was stamped on the back

For all the work it takes to get the rotor off you would be money ahead just getting new ones. Plus its probably only $10 or $15 more each to get new vs turning them.

I just got new rotors for my k10, $85.00 a piece for the hub and rotor combo's.  In my opinion if your old ones are questionable at all, well worth the price for new ones.

I used to work for Checker auto parts when I first moved to Arizona, and to be honest with you, I probably wouldn't even try to turn that rotor, its pretty hammered and would eat up a fresh set of cutters quick. Best to just replace. Just my .02

Your right Irish, around sac ( which should be higher than most places ) it is inbetween $15.00 - $25.00 to turn them.

Rotors around my area are $25 - $35 to turn, and new rotors are about $50 - $60ish.

... I may just get some new ones on mail order from the States. I'm replacing the front locking hubs with manual ones anyway so might just renew all of it, throw some new bearings on there too.

Having just had to spend $1600 getting my girlfriend's car's head rebuilt with new cams etc it's just a drop in the ocean!!!

I'll tell ya, I love having an on car lathe especially with 4WD's - Adjust wheel bearings if necessary and perfect refinish without removal and zero runout. You may want to check with your local shops and see who has an on car lathe. It may be cheaper for you to just pay to have them resurfaced on the truck.
