2000 7.4 and L480E
« on: January 16, 2017, 04:58:01 PM »
A friend I work with has a 2000 gmc 3/4 ton 2wd that has a bent frame after an accident. He already has a replacement truck. 67,000 miles on the drivetrain with no issues before the accident. I have an opportunity to buy the engine and transmission with all the electronics I want to take with it to transplant in my 82 that was converted from a diesel to gas and has an early 454 and a 700R. I figure an opportunity like this doesn't come around very often. Opinions, suggestions, things to think about? All input is welcome.

If the price is right an you are moving the ECM, wiring and fuel injection over you should see some improvements in drivability and performance.

Like Vile said, if the price is right, I would jump on the opportunity. And if I remember correctly, those late model 7.4s are the Tonawanda 454's from the Tonawanda Engine plant. Those are excellent engines.

I thought I made him an offer he couldn't refuse. But He said he would think about it. I was wrong about the mileage. It only has 42,000 on it. He bought it at a public auction. It was a work truck for the city of Shreveport here in Louisiana. He is a mechanic where I work. I am the QA/QC where we work. So we both know each other very well. I figured he would jump on my offer of $1,000.00 and my motor/transmission. That's as high as I want to go. If he says no I will just build the other early model BB I have.

So we worked this weekend and talked about it. today he accepted my offer. So I guess it's time to start thinking of all the things to address for the swap. Never done one but, looking forward to it. Lots of information here. I've got some reading to do!

Got a good up close look at the drivetrain. Should have took pics but, wasn't thinking about that at the time. Not a leak eveident and nothing damaged that I can see after a thorough look all over and underneath except for the driver side A frame may have broken the exhaust manifold in the wreck but, as far as I can tell that's it.

Can I just drop in two sending units/pumps from an 87 in my 82 dual tank setup? I am not sure if the tank hole that receives the sender/pump unit is the same without dropping it first. My 82 has the diesel tanks. Also, can I use the switching valve from an 87?

Not sure if the Diesel tanks are any different, but you can use the EP381 fuel pumps for the Vortec's and they will install just like factory into the '87 senders.  You can save some money if you buy senders without the TBI fuel pumps.  Some senders come with new fuel pumps.  The senders will work in '82 tanks, but they lack the internal baffle to prevent fuel starvation to the pump.  If you go that route you will have some fuel delivery issues at about 1/4 tank and less.

On the switching valve side...I believe the original '87 switching valve is not rated at a high enough pressure, but the replacement valve is rated to 65 psi.  On my '91 crew I was lucky enough to have the sticker still attached and readable on my valve that stated 65 psi!  I think it was a replacement valve.  Pollack was and is the OE manufacturer of that valve and they sell the 65 psi one.  It is a 6 port valve that you will need to run the fuel pumps as well.  P/N: 42-159.  You can also get a new valve with electrical connector: P/N: 42-302

Very good information. Thank you for that. I didn't think about the baffles. Seems the wise choice is to opt for the baffled fuel tanks and the senders without the pump.

It's been over a year since I last posted. Been working alot of overtime. Looking to start on this project in the near future. Bought the donor truck and I have it stored in the shop for now. Time to start shopping for some of the goodies I am going to need for my swap.
