So, who knows their engine stuff?

I'm getting ready to start my 388 build and have some questions for someone who knows what they are doing. I will be honest, I don't know when it comes to american stuff. I built a big block with my dad about 15 years ago when I was in high school. Primary use for this truck is going to be weekend cruiser and toy for embarrassing my friends in their Audi's, BMW's (they call it my red neck farm truck). No nitrous, no forced induction, no daily driving, economy is not an issue. I want something with some street manners, but also want to make some decent power and go when I put the hammer down. Here is what I have

Eagle cast steel crank (Not cast iron)
Eagle forged I-beam rods 7/16 ARP bolts 5.7"
Four bolt main two piece rear main seal block
Crane Gold series 1.5 roller rockers.
Sealed power -12cc Hypereutectic coated pistons
Lunati Voodoo cam as follows,

My first question is, heads. I'm going to spring for AFR's. I was told I need something 200-215cc's due to the displacement and cam. Opinions?

Chamber size. 65cc will net me 10.5:1, 75cc, 9.5:1 by my calculations. Obviously, I would rather get another point as that means more power. Is this do able with a modern head and ignitions on 91 California octane? Opinions?

Manifold, which one? I would imagine a good dual plane just because of driveability and the max I think it would ever turn is maybe 6500 rpm?

Carb? Again, I would imagine I need something in the 750 range? Other then that, I have no clue. I was told the 770 Holley Avenger would do nicely.

Im having the machinist check and balance the entire rotating assembly as I do not trust box parts.

I'm currently working on a 350 for my truck for the same purpose, I started a thread on it, maybe you could use some of that info.

id spring for the forged crank, your limited to the kind of power you can make, you could go bigger on the cam considering your going to get afr's

and as far as your compression ratio id try to stay at 10:1 with 91 octane although you might get away with 10.5:1 with the alum heads.
a performer rpm intake is a good street intake thats more for higher rpm although if you want the most power a victor series manifold is also very good but its more for higher rpm also.

We just finished building a 383 for an 87 c-10 almost exactly like yours. Only difference is heads, customer bought aftermarket vortec style iron heads and we cleaned up the bowls. We put 3.73 & posi in the rear and built a turbo 350 with a 10" converter It is a blast to drive. We used edelbrock performer rpm air gap & holley 750 hp carb. If you want to stripe up the road, just mash it!

I think you are a little high on your comp ratio calcs
Even with the 65cc's on a zero deck I get 10.32:1 with a .039 head gasket
With the slug .015" down in the hole I get 9.993:1 with the same gasket
(.015" down = .010" off of each deck)

all this is figured on a 4.060" bore (388?)

Yup 388. I ballparked it with what I knew I could plug in to the calculator. Looks like I may be spending my money on a trans first. My SM465 sounds like a spoon in a garbage disposal at times........... it started acting up this past week.
