Title: Clutch and SM465 on 6.5 diesel swap
Post by: 1967KaiserM715 on October 30, 2015, 07:38:08 PM
So I have my 1985 K10, originally 305 with 700r4, NP208. I picked up a Sm465 with matching NP208 and a 6.5 diesel-from a 1997 K3500 Automatic.

The SM465 should have the hydraulic clutch setup, if not I am grabbing it from a 1986 parts truck

so I found a flywheel, clutch and pressure plate kit, but it is for the 1997 6.5 and NV4500 5 speed. should that clutch and pressure plate work with the SM465? I have seem to found some conflicting information on the web, so before I spend the money I would like some reassurance that the '97 clutch stuff will still work with the hydraulic SM465

Thanks all

Why not use a 6.2L setup fir a 1985+ CK RV truck?

well, that's what I need to determine as well, if the 6.2 clutch disc and pressure plate will mount to the 6.5 flywheel, I think it will, as the later 6.2 blocks with the one-piece rear main seal, used the same flywheel, but-and I need to double check- I think the 6.2 went one-piece in 88, so I guess I would need to use a 1988-1991 1 ton, with a 4-speed.

I was just really hoping to save a little money, the "kits" for the flywheels and clutch components is cheaper then piecing together

They're balanced the same and there's no funny business like the LS motors with the pilot depth.  So as long as the bolt pattern and locator dowel pins didn't change you should be good to go.

so From some more research the flywheels are actually the same regardless of main seal style( one or two peice) which is nice to know. so therefore either pressure plate will work. only issue may be the torque rating now, the 6.5TD has like 400ft-lbs vs the 260ft-lbs of the 6.2, also the 6.5 has about 90 more horsepower, so I guess I need to figure if the clutch will hold up behind the 6.5. I won't be racing, but will be towing occasionally.

I guess that brings us back to the original question as well. what changes in the clutch throwout bearings between the SM465 and NV4500? or are they identical?
