Throttle sticky when running
« on: June 24, 2018, 02:01:32 PM »
This is a new one for me.
The accelerator is sticky when the engine is running.
Problem is with the Edelbrock carb.
If I disconnect the throttle cable and return spring, the butterfly shaft will return to
idle position with the engine not running.
Crank it up, the throttle will stick at whatever position I move it to and will not return to idle.
It is very sticky off idle.

I have cleaned the carb and sprayed WD40 on the butterfly shaft on each side without any improvement.

This really affects the smooth engagement of the clutch when leaving from a stop.

I am certain that it not the cable or pedal.

Take the carburetor off and clean/lube the throttle shaft bushings if that's what's causing it.

Sounds reasonable.

I'll give Edelbrock a shout tomorrow to hear what they have to say.

Butterfly shaft gotta be the problem.

Geez..........the Edelbrock guy was NO help!
Of course, he zeroed in on the fact that a 600cfm carb was too large for my 305,
he had no answer for the thing sticking when motor is running.
I indicated that I may move up to a 350, but if "his" carb was not going to free up,
I may replace it.
He replied "that would be a good idea!"

SOME customer support and tech help!

Polishing and lubing the throttle shaft made a major improvement.
I was also able to ease off on the return spring as the carb returns to idle without
the previously increased  tension.
I can drive it now without sounding like a rank amateur.......

Thanks!
