84 C10 Tranny Swap
« on: April 20, 2018, 12:20:13 PM »
Someday, if I EVER receive any ordered parts, I will be dropping the TH350 out
of my C10 in order to replace with a Muncie M20 car transmission.
When I replace the flex plate with a flywheel, can I reuse the crankshaft bolts
or do I need different ones?
I see flywheel bolts for sale, and I see flex plate bolts for sale.
I see 7/16-20 thread descriptions everywhere, but never any lengths.....

No the flywheel bolts are longer and they have a flat head with a small shoulder. Order flywheel bolts, don't use hardware store fasteners.

TH350 is on the ground, and out from under the truck!

It fought me, but I guess that was expected.
Muncie here we come......

Don't forget the pilot bearing/bushing.

Thanks. Pilot bushing has been "pressed" into the crank.
Now I await the correct flywheel.
Turns out the motor is newer than the 84 truck......has a 1 piece rear main, but old style heads.
Now it's gonna have a Muncie M20.
A real kettle of fish.

FW, clutch installed.
Now I await the arrival of the cast iron starter nose...................???
Who woulda thunk that bell housing installation would be held up til a different starter nose was installed???
'Parently the CI nose is reauired cuz the cast aluminum nose won't fir into the bell housing............
And I guess I need to check flywheel to starter clearance.....much easier without the BH in the way....

Cast iron starter nose arrived several days ahead of the projected date.
It installed easily and all is well.
I had seen a youtube video in which the guy said that the Bendix fork would have to be changed to fit the CI nose............
Not true (thank goodness....)

I installed the starter to check clearance and it was excellent.
Fortunately I had ordered the shorter mounting bolts.
Then I had to remove the starter to install the bell housing lower cover GRRRRRRRRRRRR....
But all is well.
Much has been learned and yet  to be learned about this process.

Now, to cut shifter hole, mount tranny, connect clutch and driveshaft.

Gettin' close......

Does anyone know how long the speedometer cable needs to be to connect my Muncie M20  in my 84 C10?
The TH350 connected on the driver's side of the tailshaft, but the M20 is on the passenger side
and angles a bit downward.
I may need to obtain a right angle adapter, but those are not cheap.......

Is it a one piece or two piece?

So you should get the correct setup for a M/T equipped truck.

Requires a 20" lower cable w/coupler (should be part of the lower cable.)

Gotcha! Thanx
