finally fixed my front drive shaft today and decided that i would go mudding with a buddy so went into the pit and the front does nothing its locked front shaft is turning but still nothing. i don't know whats wrong with it, now if you hit the higher rpms a lot of noise comes from the front. the shaft i used i know came from another 44 but the snap ring that holds it in place in the hub well the grove was a little farther back that the one we took out so we had to cut another grove in the shaft for it to work. now not knowing what year the shaft came out of why did we have to do this what years did they change this up?

on the 14 bolt how do you tell what case it is. i know its a 10.5 but i haven't seen a tag to tell what came in it stock apparently theres a difference in the 4.10 rear and 4.56 but you can put a 4.56 that is thicker to fit in the 4.10

OK update. got to thinking bout it and with the damage done to the pinion in the rear dif. and the problems with the front dif. i called a friend who's family owns a junkyard he had a couple sets of rears. ones a 14 bolt ff 10.5 and Dana 44 not sure of ratio, the other in 14 bolt ff 10.5 w/ a Dana 60 took it apart and saw it was a 4.10. come to find out thats what i already have in my truck it was OK for the 38s but I'm thinkin about 44s, probably have to use low allot more now than b4. price for eather is 300 gears in the front look OK fluid wasn't too dirty kind of new but had a little darkness to it. so i figured 300 is about what ill be paying for just in parts for one rear to rebuild and the wify agrees thats what matters ;D

44's are going to need a 456 gear. the 14 and the 60 are the way to go. You'll be stressing the D44 with 44's

Recipe:

You take 1 part D44, add 4.56 gears.

Then mix in some 44" rubber, rocks, and mud.

Mix, beat, and stir for 1 hour......

Finished Product = Trip to get the D60 and decent parts for it.

Heck I don't have rocks either, but I am going to run the 60 with 37's. You definately need a 60 going anything 40+". A 44 just can't handle the weight of 40's. Bearings go, rod ends are toasted.....etc. In the long run it would be cheaper to get the 60.
