14 bolt disc brake?
« on: December 16, 2011, 05:25:47 PM »
Well im tearin down my 79 that i 3/4 swapped and never changed the shoes on the rear so noe.thay its pretty much the frame imma ditched those heavy drums for easier discs. I got the rotors and calipers but my question is can i use the disc brake brackets off the front axle to attach the caliper to the rear? I figured.it would also help stop the 44s and get it all straight for my 16 in Lift kit

In order to swap to discs in the rear you have to get swap brackets. the ones on your front axle will not work as their made into the dust sheild. You have a few options from aftermarket comanies. I like the ones from DIY4X. They have real high quality stuff for a great price. http://www.gorancho.com/install_instructions.php. You can use the same rotors that fit on the front of your truck and calipers can be used from a 1976-1978 Cadillac Eldorado rear calipers(emergency brake equipped.) or
1971-87 GM front 3/4 ton calipers.

20 years ago when I swapped out my 14-bolt's drums for discs I used the rotors, backing plates, and calipers from the front of a 3/4-ton. Back then there was no Internet, and custom 4x4 fabricators were very local.

I had to drill/modify the backing plates, and have a machine shop build me a couple of spacers.

Things are much easier now with all of the laser cut parts available out there. But the two disc brake conversions I did back in the early 90s are still stopping the trucks I put them on. :)
