I’m Lost!
« on: February 12, 2018, 09:09:13 PM »
Hello All,

I have a 78 C10 longbed with a 454, edlebrock intake, Holley 4 barrel, MSD ignition kit and she won’t run.  I’ve changed both tanks, fuel sending units, fuel pump, alternator, coil, ignition switch, battery, battery cables, oil, transmission fluid, had the carb rebuilt and changed breaks and break lines just because. When I put the new fuel pump on it started right up and idled well for about two weeks.  I put it in drive or give it gas and it died. Now it won’t start at all WTH? I did notice that when it was running it was making a high pitched sqeeking noise but if I remove the negative battery cable the whole it’s running the noise stopped. I don’t know if one has anything to do with the other but...

Regarding the squeal, check the alternator belt adjustment.  With the engine off, grab the alternator fan directly behind the alternator pulley and try with all your hand strength to spin the pulley.  If the pulley rotates the belt is too loose and needs to be tightened.

Will the engine crank?  Make sure the positive battery cable isn't rubbed through by the frame or melted against the exhaust manifold.  Give the three fusible links a moderate tug to see if any stretch or separate.  Pull a wire off of an easily accessible spark plug and check for spark while an assistant cranks the engine.  Read through Fuel Pump? Truck died... Can't diagnose if you need details on how to go about this.  If you see a consistent blue spark, check for fuel delivery to the carburetor.

to add about the squeak, the reason it would stop when you removed the battery cable is because the alternator would stop putting a heavy load on the belt and it wouldnt slip
