Suggestions for an aftermarket electric fuel pump...
« on: February 06, 2013, 10:52:01 AM »
I have a 1973 C20 3/4 ton, 350cc motor and TH350 transmission, and I'm looking for suggestions for a electric fuel pump.  When I bought my truck the original fuel pump had already been removed and a cheap pep boys inline fuel pump was in place.  I'm about to install a Edelebrock 1406 600cfm carb and feel that I should replace the fuel pump but don't have any idea what I should replace it with.  Any suggestions would be great.  Thanks.

did the truck originally have the pump manually on the side of the engine or electrically in the tank?

either of the options for only 600cfm i would just replace it with a oem one or the similar from an auto parts store.

just my .02$

The original was manual & mounted on the side of the motor.  When I bought the truck it already had the aftermarket one installed. The one that's in it now is just a simple one from pep boys.  What I'm wondering is if there's better one that I should install now that I'm upgrading my carburetor.  Thanks for any input.

On a Eldelbrock 1406 carburetor the fuel pressure should not exceed 6.5 psi.  ( see this Eldelbrock tech article, under third question.  http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/misc/tech_center/install/carb_faq.shtml )

Therefor selecting a electric fuel pump will require a fuel regulator, which should be on your truck, I would assume the PO put one on.  The difference between switching brands ( ie, possible fuel pressures of pump ), is you will have to set the pressure accordingly.

Just for reference, this one does not show pressure rating.

     While this one does.

Which ever route you go, ask about the one you plan to buy to get as much info as possible so you can make the best choice for your needs.

I bet if you go to summitracing.com and look for Edelbrock fuel pumps, Edelbrock would have an electric and a manual pump that would work perfectly with that particular carburetor.

I have one of those cheap little pumps on my C30 (It was there when I bought it).  I have an LT1 out of a police car that I put a GM Performance Parts carb intake on along with a Holley 650 double pumper.  I have never had any symptoms that I'm running out of fuel even at speeds above the 70 MPH speed limit on the freeway.

Unless you are going to make more power than say 300 HP or drag race it, I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm actually pretty impressed with that little pump.  I wouldn't trust it on a race car or monster motor though.
