'74 Big Block headers

I bought a '74 Camper Special 2WD. It came with a 396 in place of the original 454. I put a 454 back in it, The headers that came in the truck barely hit the OEM starter and the exits don't line up with the humps in the cross member. Do I have the correct headers? Will ordering new headers for the correct application end up with the same fit issues?

     So your saying the headers came on the 396 and fit fine, but whey you installed the 454 they no longer fit ?
     As far as I can find, the 396 and 454 headers that you can buy from several different sites, both are listed under the same part #, but each engine size and years have special notes attached with them for fitment requirements.
     I would say if they do not fit on the 454 and did on the 396, then they are wrong.  While searching for new ones make sure to pay attention to the attached notes per model year and engine size.
     You never mentioned if they were shorty or long tube headers ?

They fit the same on both 396 and 454. Long tube. My question is--do all headers fit this ttruck the same way? They sell short body starters, but I don't think it should be necessary. Do they make headers that fit with a stock starter that line up with the reliefs in the cross member? I don't want to buy new ones for a '74 2WD w/ 454 and have them fit the same as the ones I have currently.

     No, not all headers are created equal as far as our trucks are concerned.  Hooker headers seem to be the favorite brand on this forum, so far nobody has complained of them not fitting and everyone who has them say's they will not buy anything else.

Thanks. I tried searching the subject, but the function is kinda wonky. Not a lot of big block details

     Yea, the BB is the minority here for sure, the 350 takes that title.

It looks like the Hooker 2454 doesn't turn towards the rear until below the starter. Can anyone confirm this?

Hooker 2454 fit perfect. Couldnt be happier. Heavy, but it should be.

I have full length headers on my 74 and had to fit a mini starter. Better upgrade anyway

How is a short starter an upgrade? I can get an oem replacement at any auto part store in the country.

The biggest problem with the stock starter especially with headers is heat soak. The clearance becomes an issue as well, removing the headers to remove the starter is a pain. Good quality high torque starters work great for engine performance upgrades, higher compression ratio's, header/oil pan clearance etc. How is it not an upgrade?
