What are you building, a mud truck, a driver, or a weekend cruiser? If you are not going to drive it a whole lot, then put in the th350 witha decent transfer case. I will catch a lot of crap for this, but my 76 K20 is by far the best one I have had. I installed a 305 H.O. that I built in my garage for like $350.00 and a rebuilt TH400 and NP203 case with rebuilt 3.73 gears and that thing runs great, lots of power, and gives me about 13-16 miles/gallon depending on how I drive. BTW, it is full time 4x4... you would not believe how hard it was to find a set of those drive flanges for one of these trucks, let alone the dust caps. I ended up removing a set from a Wagoneer(they fit in like a glove). Get the TH400, beat it up, bang it up, it just won't die... but it does eat like 25 more horses that the TH350 or 700-R4.
