Title: how many 6.2 owners do we have out there?
Post by: fitz on December 26, 2011, 06:55:52 AM
How many 6.2 owners do we have on this forum? My collection is now up to 4. All are J code motors in Military blazers and pick ups. My goal is to get one of the pick ups road worthy by springtime. What does everyone else have?

I have one, but its in a parts truck 82 K30 cab and chassis. It does run very nice, fuel pump has been teawked a bit. Starter crapped out and haven't started it in a few years now though.

I have an 85 K10 Shortbed Scottsdale  It's really nice but I must say I wish I had gotten a K30 the truck is just so different from my K30. I feel like I'm driving a cadillac (lol okay not that bad) with the half ton suspension.  But then again I'm not good with change. I just checked my MPG and I'm getting 16.099 MPG, thats kind of the reason I went for the 6.2 because I was getting about 10 with the 350 in my K30. It's got a 700R4 and 3.08 gears I think thats honestly a little low but I don't know it's only the first tank I've checked.

I am thinking about putting the 1 ton axles under it and the SM465 and NP205 from my K30 but don't know if I really want to mess with the truck it's dang near mint and original.

My 1/2 ton 1982 Suburban has the original 6.2L diesel engine with close to 500k miles on the odometer.  The engine still runs good and gets 28-31 mpg on the freeway.  The body is now rusting out so I'm planning on putting it into a 1999 Chevy Tahoe.

I have a 1986... I just replaced the cab, bed, fenders, and a bunch of little parts. About to replace the doors. I coated the frame with the KBS Coatings stuff as well. The truck originally had a 4.3L in it, but it was replaced with the 6.2L diesel and 700R4 trans before I bought it.

Fitz You mentioned you had  military 6.2 s I had one (m1008) that i ran for approx 10 years before i sold it. At that time i had every military repair manual they made for any of the military 6.2s. I also spent 6 years working on them in the Army. There a great project base for sure.

my 85k10 was equipped with the factory 6.2, but in 1995 we swapped in a factory 6.5 diesel. it also has a full banks sidewinder system. still running strong. replaced the 6.5 with a gep 6500 optimizer.

I have 2 M1008's and 2 M1009s
The blazers are all rotted out and not worth fixing, but ran/ drove when I parked them.
1 08 is in decent shape, will be an easy project someday.
The second 08 was an auction score that I got for $750, its missing some parts but still had the Dana 60 in it and a decent bed.

Sounds like the blazers are a good source of parts as both models share the same eng/trans/transfer case the rear of the m1008 came from gm with a detroit locker. A great upgrade for the front axle is a lockright locker not sure how much off roading you do. But with all 4 wheels turning its a pretty impressive rig.

I had 2 M1028's in the past that had the lockers in the front. In the future if I put a plow on the M1008 I will upgrade to a locker in the front.

I have a 6.2 in my 86 K10 extended cab. It has either a blown head gasket or cracked head, not sure yet. Work hasn't given me a chance to fix it yet. I've been working 14+ hours a day, 7 days a week. Good thing is when I do get to work on it, hopefully Ill be able to put a 6.5 intake and turbo system on it at the same time.

I got an '85 K10 Suburban down here in Mexico - GM Goodwrench crate engine with around 100,000 miles on it. Truck was originally in Virginia, sold and sent to Toronto (where I bought it) and now its about to get a new home in Houston.

I love 6.2's - so easy to work on.

I was just browsing this section and noticed CB42 said he has an 85 gmc k1500 EXTENDED cab. This sparks my curiosity, last time I checked square bodies were standard and crew cabs only. So CB42 I'd like to hear more about this. Some pictures would be great!

The extended cabs were aftermarket conversions. There's a thread here somewhere, I've been away to long. I have 5 of them and Zeig85 has a real nice one as well. I'd still like to see pics tho

You can search " extended cab" and come up with a lot of posts. I haven't had time to do much to mine so most of the threads have grown stagnant. Hopefully this spring I can start one.

How does a guy determine if its a J code
Title: Re: how many 6.2 owners do we have out there?
Post by: fitz on September 17, 2014, 03:37:15 PM
The J code motor does not have an egr valve.
If you google "6.2 j code manifold" it will show a link to a YouTube video that shows the difference between the C code (emissions) and the J code (non emission) manifolds.

I have an '84 K20 that is possibly a rare specimen.
It has the 6.2 C code, 700R4, with 8600GVWR.
From what I've read here, the 8600GVWR in a 4x4 is odd. It has the 13" rear drums, JD/JB7 front calipers, with quad front shocks.
It is a Silverado package that was ordered with most options;
PW, PL, CC, AC, tilt column, premium sound, carpet w/ full floor mat over it.
Sliding rear window, clearance markers, two tone tan+brown paint, dual saddle tanks.
The wheels; I can't find if they are OEM, but have seen them in Chevrolet advertising of the time. They are white wagon wheels.
I'm probably forgetting some.

All I can say is; it is an amazing rig to drive. The 6.2 puts out great power, I average 19MPG.

I forgot to add, it also has factory clock and headliner.

I have a few pictures. I haven't taken a ton because it is a bit mismatched and missing things.

Nice looking truck! My dad's 82 K20 was an 8600GVWR and it was a 4x4. Now granted it had a 350 VIN code M gas engine and a TH400 3 speed auto trans with the semi float 14 bolt rear end. It also had the 13 inch rear drums. Some of those options may not be as rare as you might think.

From what I heard, it was much more common for the C20's to get the 8600 GVWR, with the K20's getting a lower one usually due to the extra front axle weight.
The quad front shocks also come into play, is that part of the 8600 package, or another thing altogether?

I got my first '86 K20 6.2L earlier this summer. Aside from a broken rear main leaf, I've only done minor maintenance to it. I'm trying to decide if I should just keep it as a work truck or fix it up to be more comfortable and more of a daily driver.

I'd fix it up, as long as it isn't in too bad of shape.
I bought my 6.2 for $500 because the trans had an issue.
Some tinkering, i got it road worthy. A bit more tinkering, now its a pretty nice daily driver and I'm slowly restoring it.

I have a few trucks that have the 6.2L.

Mostly gutless when pulling or pushing my 6klbs of steel up the highway but I have a few big blocks for power when it's really required.

The 6.2L equipped trucks do have one good reason for being and IMO that is the fact that the engine is EMP proof. Also having a few alternators and starters in a Faraday enclosure is more piece of mind.

That and having a manual transmission so if the starter won't turn over the engine, gravity will.

I got it out of a Army base in IA about 6 years ago.
The dually configuration is rare. Most all are single wheel as you
Probably know.
23xxx. miles on the clock.

Got rid of the camo and repainted with original base 383 OD green
Added cab lights (to meet DOT/IL 80" laws) and emblems for a more civy look.

That's a sweet looking power wagon! What all have you done to it, what's under the hood?

I just picked up a J Code 1988 v20 Suburban with the 6.2 liter I towed 7000 pounds with it when I fired it up yesterday and It did great and it's been sitting for 6 years so of course one tire needs a valve stem and my vacuum pump is no longer working and I get that random stall when the water in fuel light comes on so a little bit of work to do but it started up just fine up here in North Dakota with no plug in right now

Have a couple of 6.2 powered trucks myself,

The crew cab will getting a Banks setup installed in the spring.
The 83 K20 is just a plow truck so it will get just enough attention to keep it running.

I have an 83 k20 6.2 4x4 dually with banks turbo and gearvendor auxiliary transmission, she runs butter smooth but blows white smoke on cold start, just had the fuel injectors rebuilt and new glow plugs put in but still smokes :/. Having a hard time finding parts for the engine, can't find anyone that will rebuild it just in case it comes to that lol
