Energy Suspension Red Control Arm Bushings
« on: October 22, 2018, 04:00:52 PM »
I am redoing a 1980 c-10 2WD in total, and was looking at Energy Suspension's rebuild kit instructions:

Install the outer sleeve, and tap to lock in place.

Lube the sleeve and bushing, insert bushing.

Then insert inner sleeve, and assemble.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but from what I know about stock bushing is that the rubber between the outer and inner sleeve is bound to the two, the inner being locked to the shaft, the outer moving with the arm.

As such, the movement of the control arm flexes the rubber, creating resistance that dampens the movement of the Control arm.

ES looks like it will just slip and slide when the Control arm flexes.

Has anyone used these and can comment?

You're correct.  The urethane bushings don't absorb appreciable torsion but act as rigid fillers to minimize axial and radial deflection of the inner shafts.  They function very well and provide extended service life when compared to rubber bushings.  However, don't skimp on the application of the silicone dampening fluid during assembly (which has the consistency of ultra-viscous, high-shear grease) or the suspension will be plagued by annoying squeaks.  I've used them on many vehicles, including GM trucks, with great success.

Thank you Sir!

I guess the compression of the end cap washer and nut load up the bushings to the degree you stated.

I look forward to installing them, and thanks for the lubrication tip.

We used them on Brooke's truck (black though). They work great, but buy more of the grease, they don't include enough.

From their website: "Only small amounts are required to properly lubricate bushings and metal components and to prevent corrosion."

Good Grief this stuff is sticky, permeates nitrile gloves!

Had to use 'silicon/wax remover' to get it off!

Technically does anyone know what this crap is?

Whining like a mule but boy those brass sleeves and red rubber look good against a black control arm!!!
