Changing waterpump:
« on: March 11, 2024, 07:09:07 PM »
All the videos i've seen so far is basically putting new gaskets and just bolting the new pump onto the block.  Of course, you have to get the old  gaskets completely off the block.   But what i'm trying to ask is that it seems with small block you have to use sealant on the gaskets, but with LS, you just put new gaskets on and that's it?

I can't speak to what factory did with LS, but with any paper gasket that seals a water passage I ALWAYS use a thin layer of blue RTV. Always had good success with that.

My Dad was a Mopar mechanic in the 50's and 60's. He always coated gaskets with grease. That way if it needed to be replaced later, then gasket came off easier. I still do the same thing and have never had a gasket leak. Also, the gasket was held in place when installing.

SBC/BBC I usually use a small bead of silicone on the pump side to retain on the pump for install/removal.  (heard grease used, I just never did)
LS motors use o-ring gaskets and they are typically resuable for a couple times.

Don't use grease or Vaseline on rubber seals and gaskets, use Sil-glyde instead. If you are dealing with imperfections, use Permatex (the right stuff) avoid the blue goo.
