Title: Belt noise
Post by: fiddler on November 04, 2018, 01:23:18 AM
So I just changed the water pump on my 350.  It ran nicely for a couple of minutes, then the new pump started squeaking.  I shut down and checked things and started up and it ran then started squeaking.  I shut down again, and rechecked everything I could think of, then started up, and it squeaked for a few more seconds, then quieted down.  Monitored temperature, watched thermostat open, then fan come on.  No squeaking.  Then cooled it down for a few hours and started up again...no squeaks.  Not sure why a new pump would do this, but thought I would share the experience......  If the shaft falls off I will be sure to re post!

How did you determine the noise was emanating from the water pump?  If an alternator belt is glazed or slightly loose, it can squeal when the engine is first started since the alternator places the maximum load on the belt as the battery recovers from the starter cranking draw.  The high load can cause the alternator belt to slip temporarily.

Sounds like a loose belt.

With the engine off, see if you can move the alternator 'fan blades' at the pulley.

If you can move it at all, it's too loose and you will not get full charge to your battery.

If that happens, expect other problems... ::)

Could have got some anti-freeze on the belt.
Belts will squeal when that happens until it dries out or
Burns off,

Not sure what it was, but everything is perfectly "silent" under the hood now.  No strange squeaks or groans.  So gratifying!!  Also no coolant smell.  I was getting a whiff now and then, probably from the water pump.
