What SEM spray to redo panels
« on: August 06, 2022, 05:07:09 AM »
Hello again. I am currently refurbishing my trucks interior. It is a 1987 model and the color is Saddle. I need to repaint the door panels. However! The SEM color for Saddle looks brown. So that's not right. It does not look like a butter scotch color which is my truck's interior color from the factory. Here is a link below:

https://www.amazon.com/SEM-15033-Saddle-Color-Coat/dp/B00063VKQ4/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=SEM%2Bsaddle&th=1

If you scroll down on that page you can see that someone posted a pic of their results on a door panel. Clearly it is brown. The Saddle color in my 87 is a much lighter tan color than that. So I am hoping that somebody here can tell me the right SEM color to redo my interior plastics.

Thank you

I have attached the color code. But on the back of my door panel I saw that it says Saddle. The sticker is from my glove box.

I have a few cans of that and it is Saddle Tan, not the Dark Saddle you think it is. OER PP818 is Dark Saddle.

Yes mine is definitely the lighter color not the darker one. Do you happen to have the color code from your lighter cans?

Thank you

Do you know if the interior panels are ABS plastic? I have to figure out which adhesion promoter to use. Otherwise some things are saying it will melt.

Thank you

Most likely it is ABS plastic!

Most likely it is ABS plastic!

If so then you don't use any adhesion promoter, only alcohol I guess. Or acetone.

Did mine with Plasticoat rattle cans and did use their plastic primer without any problems but not happy with the colour, I think I need the lighter shade saddle mentioned above as my interior is not brown, more a sandy kind of colour.

Clean the panels and wipe them with prep all. Adhesion promoter will not melt them.

Had to do some checking to find everything out. If you want to use SEM you either have the paint shop mix up the exact color (about $30) or you hope amazon has your color (about $20).

You have to check to see if you have ABS plastic by using Acetone on the back. If it makes a little melted spot, you got ABS and you have to use one type of adhesion promoter. If it's not ABS then you have some kind of weird recycled plastic thing and it calls for a different promoter. If you are using SEM you got no choice but to figure out which. The rep said it won't stick nearly as well without it. Maybe they just want to sell more but I don't want to find out the hard way.

Thank you to everyone for the info and help.

Just looking for opinions on this. If you scroll down on this page. Do you think that center console at the very bottom is close to the factory color?

Apparently we do not have ABS plastic. I could not get 100% Acetone to "melt" or eat into the back of the door panel at all. The panel was immune. Here's what SEM says to do:

"Place a drop of acetone on the back of the
plastic. Rub with your gloved finger.

If the plastic smears and melts, it is ABS.
Use Sand Free Adhesion Promoter.

If the acetone does not have an effect on
the plastic, use XXX Adhesion Promoter
or Plastic Adhesion Promoter."
