bd: The actual amps are not the issue.  Just about any varistor sold as a surge protector is fine.  They just get wired across the coil in each location.

nlauffer: Necessary for longevity of the system.  Safety is not an issue here.

OK, what I meant for safety is that the parts would be sure to fail without the addition of these parts.  You answered my question, I believe.  This would be like when we wired up soft start panels for the City's water wells.  We had probably 5 different safeties and backups for each circuit.
