Things you hate about our trucks
« on: May 05, 2009, 09:03:00 PM »
So I thought it would be interesting to bring up what everyone's pet peves are about our trucks.

I'll start my list here:

The factory wheel offset, just look how far in the wheels were tucked and the track on a 4x4

The steering column is too tall

The ugly big mirrors with the long bracket

The radio

ok and my biggest most recent aftermarket pet peve haas become the visor. I am sick visors!  ;D

hrm my pet peave would have to be uhm well i dont really have any, although i dont like those factory covered tripod mirrors...i am more of a west coast style mirror...i prefer to have an "octpus mounted on the side of my door...you all will get a kick out of the custom mirror brackets I plan on making for my truck its gonna be ridiculous...

I think the cab should be longer for more leg room.  It's hard to get an aftermarket seat that fits well.  And the biggest thing, how easy they rust  :'(

How about the dual tanks being filled on differant sides?? They should have filled from one side like F**d did it.

the lack of possible speaker setups behind the passengers.  Yeah, that's it.

the chrome trim on the 70's models is hard to work with after painting the truck.

they go too fast and therefore many tickets are passed out to Chevy powered trucks--i think that's profiling, really.  Cops oughta pick on fords too, there are plenty of long downhills that can cause the fords to pick up speed and then nab them.

Vile pretty much summed it up for me, as well as Novadiecast about the fillers on both sides of the trucks.  The only other thing I have related only to my particular trucks. That is that it seems no one kept records when they built them >:(

If you had a th400 like mine, your truck would slow down while coasting a 20% grade! LOL

My biggest beef is the lack of rust prevention.

After having an 81-87 pickup for 4 years, and now I have a 73-80, I get to watch the hood flutter around since it's not near as stiff as an 81-87 hood.  I'd also like more cab room to recline the seat a bit while maintaining legroom.  I bet 3 inches would make a huge difference.

#1 is the rust. In certain points they are just designed to be doomed. I know there are trucks and cars that rust even easier, but still.

1/2-ton drive shaft u-joints are pretty pathetic. And axles are not very strong either, considering the weight of these things. It's a cost efficiency thing, sure, but in a pretty annoying area.

Some minor flaws: 73-80 hood and its hinges, tilt steering column getting sloppy and being hard to tear apart to fix (just doing this w/ my 2wd), stock windshield washer...

I actually do like the tripod mirrors, and don't mind the short cab, even though I'm over 6'. These kind of things are just parts of the character of these trucks...  :)

To many to list. But the cool thing is these days, there is a way to get around almost all of em.

After owning the 67-72 series, talk about a small cab, and the 88-on up with the real rust I am happy with my pair.  They are inexpensive to buy, and parts interchange for many years.  I look at the positive in my trucks.  I think rust is a problem in certain areas of the country but the newer trucks 88 on up are worse off.  My 85, had it for around 4 years now was from the St. Louis area and never spent a day in a garage.  Yes it has the typical rust on it but I have never had to replace the brake lines or power booster like I had to on my 95.

Hey Vile, you forgot the factory trampoline bench seats.

I also forgot the highway gearing!

Do you mean 2.73's on 29" tires behind a 700R4 trans (1550 rpm @ 70 mph)?  LOL.
