Notification of Risk — DisclaimerTHIS FORUM IS NOT A CODIFIED INSTRUCTIONAL PLATFORM OR INSTITUTION ORGANIZED TO PROVIDE STEP-BY-STEP OEM APPROVED REPAIR PROCEDURES. RATHER, IT IS A MEMBERSHIP OF HOBBYISTS REPRESENTING A DIVERSE RANGE OF BACKGROUNDS WHO SHARE THEIR OPINIONS AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCES ON VARIOUS TOPICS OF INTEREST THAT RELATE PREDOMINATELY TO 1973 — 1987(91) GM LIGHT-DUTY TRUCKS.Working on vehicles and/or vehicle components is inherently dangerous! The potential for accidental property damage, personal losses, and traumatic injuries, including burns, electric shocks, lacerations, dismemberment, maiming, and death to and of yourself and others is very real and nearly limitless! Skilled knowledge of safety protocols, the proper use of tools and equipment, correct and accepted repair procedures, hazardous automotive and industrial chemical handling, flammable fluid handling, and safe vehicle operation are absolutely necessary to minimize risks! Of course, the only way to eliminate risks is never to attempt to perform any repairs or modifications, since even properly executed repairs carry some risk and can expose you to hazardous situations.
The Forum and its Members, individually and collectively, have no control over your experience, judgment, or understanding of the topics discussed, or your knowledge and ability to effectively and safely perform repairs and/or modifications.
Therefore, by proceeding to work on vehicles and/or vehicle components using information gleaned from this forum you accept automatically and entirely all responsibilities and consequences of your actions, repair procedures, misunderstandings, mistakes, and any safety violations, known or unknown to you and/or others, holding harmless and without recourse 73-87chevytrucks.com, The Forum, The Forum Owner, The Forum Staffs, and The Forum Members. Attempting to apply or use any information posted to and on The Forum is to willfully proceed at your own risk with full personal assumption and acceptance of responsibility, solely and completely, concerning the suitability of said information to task and all outcomes, both intended and unintended, known and unknown, demonstrated and exercised by your own free choice and judgment through your act of proceeding with said application or use of such posted information.A brief sampling of some of the most fundamental safety considerations and potential hazards encountered in a hobby such as ours follows.
0) DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PERFORM ANY WORK OR OPERATE ANY TOOL, WHETHER UNPOWERED OR POWERED, OPERATE ANY EQUIPMENT, MACHINE, OR VEHICLE WHILE INTOXICATED OR UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ANY MEDICATION, SUBSTANCE, ILLNESS, OR CONDITION THAT ATTENUATES OR OTHERWISE IMPAIRS YOUR REAL TIME JUDGMENT, ACCURATE PERCEPTION, ANALYTICAL AWARENESS, OR REACTION TIME. Violating
this most basic rule is poor practice, exposing you and others to innumerable immediate and delayed risks, including property damage and an extensive gamut of injuries and liabilities!
1) Avoid working in confined spaces with poor ventilation, especially if there is potential for a buildup of suffocating gases (e.g., CO, CO
2) or noxious gases.
2) Maintain an organized workspace that has ample room to move unencumbered with few to no obstructions.
3) ALWAYS have a charged and appropriately rated fire extinguisher within reach and know how to use it.
4) IMMEDIATELY wipe away and remove any standing or pooled flammable fluids such as gasoline or other combustible aromatic solvents.
5) NEVER use gasoline as a cleaning solvent! Gasoline is highly flammable and easily distributed across a broad area, saturating clothes and making fire suppression and mitigation deadly challenges.
6) Consciously keep hands and fingers clear of rotating or moving assemblies such as fans, drive belts, drivelines, and meshing gears that can instantly sever fingers and mangle hands.
7) Wear sturdy hand and finger protection, exercising extreme caution when running fingers along blind edges. Unchamfered, machined edges can be razor sharp and impart long, deep lacerations without forewarning.
8) Remove rings, watches, bracelets, and any loose jewelry before working on any part of a vehicle or its components. Rings, watches, and bracelets can become snagged, hopelessly trapping hands and arms. Jewelry worn around your neck can become entangled, causing suffocation by garroting. Should a metallic ring, watch, or jewelry inadvertently bridge a battery's positive post to ground, the unexpected arc (similar to a welding arc) is startling, triggering a 'wild jerk reaction' — in an instant, burns are oftentimes severe with painful branding and possible removal of flesh to the bone!
9) Avoid wearing loose-fitting clothes that can become snagged or entangled, trapping arms or dragging hands into rotating assemblies.
10) Wear eye safety goggles and face protection whenever there is a risk of flying debris, metal shards, or fluids.
11) Avoid breathing aerosol chemicals, solvents, and paint.
12) Avoid inhaling any airborne dust created by disturbing brake or clutch assemblies.
13) ALWAYS endeavor to work with your vehicle parked on a hard and level surface with the parking brake firmly set.
14) NEVER crawl under a vehicle that is raised off the ground and not properly supported by a sturdy vehicle lift with functioning safety brakes or properly rated and safely located jack stands.
15) And, so on...
The foregoing partial list is by no means complete but offered as a tiny sampling in an attempt to stimulate your awareness and alertness to the existence of
countless potential hazards in advance, that you may avoid injury and loss through education and by paying attention, evaluating potential risks, and exercising judgment as part of your strategy BEFORE you begin and DURING any repair or modification. Consequently, your education, experience, knowledge, competence, decisions, and choices are
your responsibilities to evaluate, acquire, and make BEFORE proceeding with any repair or modification. It is far wiser and safer to postpone an activity for further consideration than to forge ahead stubbornly while poorly informed and ill-prepared. Work smart! Work safe!
