Sanding and Primer
« on: February 20, 2017, 12:50:14 PM »
Hey guys and Gals,
I have a question about sanding and primer. I just bought different hood and fenders for my 79 K10 and I'd like to sand them and the whole truck and spray it with primer so the truck isn't 10 different colors. What's the best way to tackle the sanding part? Have no idea on what grit to start with, any input would help! thanks!

Are you talking about using spray bomb or shooting from a gun?

Use a DA and depending on how much material you are attempting to remove determines which grit you want to start with.

The primer specs will dictate final grit, typically a 220 grit is good for most primers.

Depending on how much paint you wish to remove a light skim with 80 grit on a DA should help smooth everything out to a better surface. Any imperfections will be magnified when you paint.

I was thinking about just using a spray can. I'm not going to be painting it for a while.. Mostly just want the whole truck the same color.

Bare primer will not provide rust protection just so you know.
