Front wheel rotors bearing question
« on: May 02, 2021, 12:04:16 PM »
I have a 1984 C10 and I'm going to replace the calipers, pads, and rotors on my front wheels.
Do you recommend replacing the wheel bearings or just clean and re-lube them? Thanks, Chuck

Check them closely for wear. Look for pitting on the rollers and races. Also, if the grease is discolored, as in black, may indicate damage.

I recently had a shop pack my bearings before a trip to WA state, only to find he didn't check for wear. Right inner bearing was smoked, happy it didn't seize during the trip. Just kind of low vibration into the frame.

Figured it out when I was on a right hand freeway curve, the noise stopped... :o

Hey Mr. Popper, I'll definitely look for pittings and black grease during my overhaul.

It's because of mishaps as you have described is why I prefer to do my own work when it comes to my truck.
From there, it's as the song goes "It's nobody's fault but mine".

My question involves me ordering all the parts online before taking down the project so I can have everything on hand.

I was curious if most backyard mechanics would order new bearings when ordering a new rotor.

Wise course to have all parts on hand when you're in there: just do it once!

However, make sure you can return parts within a window that works for you.
