73 C20, 2wd, 350 with roller cam, along with other mods, aluminum heads, RPM intake, 670 cfm TBI, headers, true dual exhaust, built up 700R4, 14Bolt full floater with 4.10 gears, 265/75R16 10 ply tires. I drive this truck every day, everywhere I need to go. Cruising 55-60 I get the best, between 15-17 mpg, depending on wind and traffic and what not. In town, probably more like 10-12 at most. I wouldn't hesitate to use it to commute that far every day. My commute is only 9.5 miles one way, half is between 50-55 mph, half is stop in go up the middle of town, average 35 mph.

a couple things to figure out. is the cost of a tbi or any other mods going to be counter productive in the millage increase? in my 91 v3500 with the 4l80e/205 (crew cab) i was getting i think 13 with the 350 gas motor truck weighed about 7k. now i have a cummins in the crew cab and it gets 16 weighs about 7.5k. i can see someone getting 16 in a reg cab but 20 would kind of be crazy. a OD trans will prob help the most but you might spend 1-3k in getting OD. gear/s is another option and might only cost 100-400 for a set of used axles.

lets say you do drive 80 miles/day for a year (252 work days) at 10 mpgs and $2.00/gal gas. you will spend $4032/year on fuel.
now same thing but with 16 mpgs you will spend $2520/year so you will save 1500/year. so it might take you a year to pay something off and thats 80 miles a day

My truck has the factory original TBI on a Goodwrench 350. I have a half ton and a 700R4 trans and my truck is a 4x4. I have 3.73 gears. All the engine internals are stock as far as I can figure. My truck sits stock on 31x10.50R15 tires, new. I also have new exhaust that's routed exactly like the factory had it minus the catalytic converter. In town driving in stop and go traffic, I usually average around 12 to 13 MPG depending on how heavy I get on the gas from a stop. Highway cruising, I average around 16, maybe 17. I would probably average higher mileage if I didn't have the altitude working against me. Where I live, I'm close to 7000 feet elevation!

My 87 is stock except for the aluminum radiator and intake manifold. I also put in a tach and it has helped with the gas mileage. I keep it running smooth and keep my foot out of it unless needed. I constantly get 17 to 18 miles per gallon. It helps that a large part of my 35 mile trip is free way so I am cruising at 63 mph and the tach is around 1800.
