lifted truck gears
« on: March 03, 2012, 09:43:27 PM »
ok im looking at a 83 k-30 with about a 6 inch lift on what appears to be 34 inch tires (not sure didnt really look at them) but the fron spider gears are out in the front and it had 3.73 gears. my question is would it be best to lower the gears to 4.11 or to leave them as is if i get the truck as i would like to play with it but still be able to handle driving on the road with out blowing up the tranny. if anyone could help me thanks

depends on the trans but 3.73 would be ok for only 34s i would even think they would work well with 38s

also another question would it be best to just get the spider gears or to put a power-lock locker in it cause it has a full float axle for the front axle

The answer depends on how you are going to use the truck.  Lockers are great if you plan on 4 wheeling a lot or use it a ton in the snow.  Other wise lockers are expensive to put in and do bring the gas mileage down a lot unless it is a selectable locker.

Judging by the pic it has 37" Wrangler H1 take offs. 3.73's would be pushing it. You would be happier with 4.11's or even 4.56's.

Did you drive the truck? That would be the best deciding factor for you. I would think that 3:73 will do fine. Also I would be willing to bet that the front end needs more than just spider gears.

4.88? 4.10s are the highest i would think of going with only 37s. if i was to do mine over i would go with 3.73 not 4.10s but its not cost effective to replace them now. you will be screaming just going 50 with 4.88

I had 4:88 in a jeep I built once for rock crawling, I trailered it everywhere because the top speed was 60 mph on the freeway, unless you wanted to blow it up.  (which my ex-wife did after we got divorced)
