454 cam choice
« on: May 19, 2016, 03:37:21 PM »
As the title suggest im looking at doing a swap since i will be on vacation and replacing my timing chain in 2 weeks. I have 82 c10 origanlly had the 6.2 diesel. The 454 is out of a 83 c30 dually. The heads are peanut port low compression 8ish i believe from reading. Engine is stock except for headers into purple hornies. Carburetor is a 625 street demon just installed but gonna go up to 750 street demon. Really loving the 625. Im looking in two lunati and howard for my cam choice. No roller setup though i wish but its a budget build. Any suggestions? The Truck is daily driven and will be tracked when i have time 1/8th mile only.

my Dads 85 has a 454 running 8.5:1 compression (runs on 87 Octane) and it's putting out 450 horse 500 ft-lbs roughly, the only real difference is that it has a set of World heads and the biggest long tube headers he could find/modify.
The Torque curve is all bottom and mid range and it's rev limited to 5000 rpm via MSD ignition, if your interested ill have to get the technical info as this was a custom ground cam designed for off road drag racing and mudding.

Peanut port heads are responsive at low rpm. Not really good for any type of performance other than towing because of the torque at said low rpm. They run out of "gas" early.  Anything much more than stock lift and duration will  hinder more than help. I had the same setup but shelved the 239 p ports and put on a pair of 781 oval ports with a 224/234 duration    510/540 lift cam......with 3.73 gears it hums along pretty well from idle to 5K or so. Would probably do better on the top side with a set of headers but I am not keen on the noise...

Ive researched the peanut ports and i was leaning towards a pair 781s or 049s but people to get 500hp which is not my goal currently but later down the road. But it seems for now the peanut ports should hold there own. But i new trans problem popped up yesterday. Wouldnt go into any gears but this morning it worked fine. So gonna drop pan see if there thing out of the ordinary and change filter. But kinda just want to get a,rebuild for peace of mind.
