84 k10 Steering box play
« on: July 26, 2016, 12:33:25 PM »
Hey guys,  my 84 k10 is starting to have quite a bit of extra play in the steering and I'm wondering if there is a good fix or if replacing the steering box is my best option.  I recently rebuilt the front end and it has a 6inch suspension lift with dual shock steering stabilizer but I didn't change out the box.  I should be getting new tires here soon and an alignment but I would like to also get some of the play out of the steering.  Last time I had new tires put on and had the truck aligned the shop thought there was excessive play in the box.

Make sure the frame ain't cracked around the box, it's common especially with a lift

Is there a good place to get a new box? Also I know when I went through my truck originally I had to get a different year outer tie rod because the long tie rod had been replaced from a truck of an earlier year.  I also had to use wheel bearing part numbers that came out of it to match them up.  Is there a way to tell that the steering box is the correct one and year for my 84 just incase that has been swapped at some point in its life?
