My 85 K20 I started a while back some of you may remember. I took a few pics inside yesterday but the color looks even better outside. I am putting the new bedsides on Monday and then once that's all set painting the bed. Right now I'm putting the cab back together but here's a couple pics...

Thanks! The truck was originally blue (ugly blue) so I wanted to kinda keep to the original color anyway. The color is Subaru WRX blue. I think it's definitely the coolest blue I have seen. I paid about $220 bucks extra for that tint but it was worth it.
As far as the bedsides go I called this company VENG I used to use a lot but that was bought out by Keystone. I paid about $320 a side delivered. But Keystone doesn't carry them so I'm not sure if they are going to discontinue them or not. As far as the quality of the bedsides goes I'm sure they'll be decent but I'll let you know for sure on Monday when I check them out.

Looking good. I'm trying to decide what color to paint my 85. I like black and I have a red 87, but I was thinking of a lighter color thats a little more forgiving about showing small pings and stuff. Any suggestions- white, llight blue, silver or gray?

White hide flaws the best.

How bout this? single stage- urethane, acrylic enamels etc. or base coat clear coats?
-
Base Coat Clear Coat is the best paint. It takes longer to paint but you can get the paint flawless and lay on the clear = best quality paint job. Single stage = quicker and easier and acylic enamels = Maaco paint job.

-
looking awesome man, where did you get that grill??????i want one.
-
I bought the grill off of one of the members on here. It's used but I'm just going to clean it up, and replace the the bolts with black cap screws. It'll look nice when done I think. I'm not sure where he bought it new though.
-
Looks sharp.Keep the pics coming!
-
Looks great Dell. I see you got the grille ok. I got the grille from Aim Industries. www.truckin.com I have bought a bunch of stuff from them but I don't like them because they seem to charge too much for shipping. They also have screwed up my order several times. I could not find the grille anywhere else.
-
Yes I did! I took the grille apart and cleaned it with acid. Then I masked off the front and painted it from the backside with krackle black in my paint gun. It came out beautiful. I also replaced the screws with black allen head screws. It looks awesome!
-
love the blue and the grille looks way better with the center bar in there. hope you get decent box sides, ordered mine thru napa from a distributer called grandwest, only ordered one as the parts guy told me to expect a lil shipping damage as its a longbed. luckily it came without a dent amnd fit good other than opening up the bolt holes around wheel well
-
I'll take some pics of the bedsides today and try to get them posted.
Ok the bedsides are actually pretty good but as any panel if you want it to look perfect you're gonna have to do some work. Had to shave it down in a few spots, touch up a few spots here and there. I'm hoping to have it painted by the weekend if all goes well....

The Phantom Grille required some customizing. I had to make brackets that would work and make the parking lights fit behind the grille. So what I did was I swapped the left and right parking lights and installed them upside down using speed nuts.
Then i drilled an extra hole in the lower valance and secured them to the lower valance using black trim screws.

That's what I had to do with my turn signals. I should have told you that, sorry. You will have to drill some drain holes in the bottom of them too. I found that out the hard way. They'll fill up with water when you wash it or if it rains. How do I post pictures in my Text? I tried to post some pictures but I could not do it. Thanks Edited by: chevytech2002 at: 8/15/06 8:02 pm

I don't have any problems with them filling up with water knock on wood. To post pix you need to host the image somewhere. Upload it to a website like photobucket and then post the url in brackets or in the image link

That looks sweet, nice paint too buy the way. I have never been a big fan of the four headlight system but wuth that grill it looks sweet. nice truck.
-
Thanx guys! The bed is going on this weekend hopefully. I am carefully working on my radio install now. I want it to look good.
I always cut the dash bezels with an air saw and they never came out perfect but this time I used a hot knife on the end of my soldering iron and used a bezel with the big radio opening. I got it to fit perfect in the bezel. Now I just have to cut the dash!
-
I have a Dremel tool and it has a miniture blade that looks like a skill saw blade on about a 2" long shank. It works great for coutting plastic. I am in the process of installing mechanical gauges in my 86s idiot light gauge cluster.

Well I've since gotten the interior together, the stereo installed, the bed on amongst 10 zillion other silly little things like the headliner and such but here are some more pics. The outside ones didn't come out so good because it was pouring out!

This is the company one.newsales.com/store_ma...9&offset=0
Just be aware these aren't in stock, they build them and take a while to get and they don't look just like in the picture. Also their prices don't reflect add ons like the track to fit your truck, console, fabrics etc but I liked the idea of being able to customize mine rather than just pick one out of a book so that's why I used them. I'll try to get more pix later like with the seat up
-
Your truck looks really nice. Good job man. Are you going to paint the middle of your grill blue? I think that would look good.
-
That is an awesome looking truck and paint. I'm pricing paint for my 76 fleetside and wondering what kind of feedback I can get from you guys as far as price expected and quality, like a 2 stage primer with base clear coat finished off with 4? coats of clear, (one to be sanded pretty much). I'm interested in everybody's opinions!

Whatever happened to Truck of the Month? Remember when we couldn't even get anybody to put theirs in for it?
Thanks Vile, for sharing your truck with us. Really one of the best! Don St.Clair

-
Thanks for all the compliments! I would consider making a seperate blue insert in the grill if I get bored and see how it looks or someone could photoshop it on there for me if they're bored
I just finished the exhaust system. It came out beautiful. I used a set of shorty headers made for an 88 up chevy and dual aluminized with Flowmasters and two universal cats that will only be on there for a short amount of time I will have to post some more pics maybe this weekend if the weather ever clears up!
-
That color looks nice on that truck!
I personally think a stock Silverado style 87 grille and headlight bezels with a white center grille bar would have looked awesome with the truck, but that custom grille looks pretty sweet also. I am anxious to see what this truck ends up looking like.
-
An ebay search for bowtie grill emblems shows a bunch, but you might have to paint one to match.

That is one fine four wheel drive! You did a great job! I like your choices all around, I wouldn't change a thing but the oil.

Thanks! Although I'm not done yet!
-
I was bored so I photoshoped your grill. This is what it would look like if it was the same colour as your truck. If you want I can put a bow tie in the middle as well.
-
that truck is sweet man, you did an awsome job on it! Where did you get the kick panels with the speakers in it from?
-
That is a sharp truck Vile. What else are you planning to do to it out of curiousity?
-
Thanks for the compliments guys. The kick panels I got from this website however they are not the whole kick panel it's just the lower half like on the earlier models. I didn't realize this when I bought them. The one like sells cover the whole kick panel. I had to cut my existing ones to match which was a pita but the came out pretty good. I think 73-80 only had the two piece kick panels. I bought my own speakers for them.
What else am I planning to do? I may put 35"s on it and want to paint the slots in the wheels to match the truck. Maybe a different hood down the road, going to convert it to EFI, going to put AC back in it, someone removed it before I got my hands on it. Converting it to Serpentine belt system, I need to replace the ride height proportining valve and brake cable too. Other than that, I plan on using this thing as a regular pick up truck. My GMC on the other hand is only used for picking up chicks LOL
-
Looks great, very clean look to it.

I've been looking for a set of Alum slots for some time now. I guess nobody makes them anymore.
Steve
-
hey vile, i was curious how those aftermarket bedsides you used fit up. i am thinking of buying them for my 77. your truck looks great but the way.
-
The bedsides worked out great. Just like any body panel though they had to be shaved down in a few spot and a little work here and there but one thing I would have done differently was fit the bed to the truck to ensure absolutely perfect body width and body lines. I kind of rushed and the bed is slighlty wider than the cab. The average guy would never notice but me I'm anal. The last set I used we had to shim outward because it was too narrrow and a lot of shimming and seam sealer was used on that truck. I was over all pleased with their quality though.
As far as Aluminum Slots go - I love them and there is a company who makes repro's of them in high polished aluminum. Or do what I did and scour ebay til you find a set. I may sell these down the road though due to a conflict of interest with my GMC lol
-
are the bedsides triplus are something else.
-
I got them from Keystone / Veng
-
off topic a bit, but did you know Greg who owned the Blazer in your profile pic?
-
I talked to the guy selling that truck - he wants wayy too much$ for my budget
-
Update - Today I switched over to the CS alternator from the SI and installed the serpentine belt system and a new fan. while I was in there I put in a new power steering pump and AC compressor too. Tomorrow I am going to install a new Accumulator and the lines and charge it up! I can't wait to have AC :D When I bought the truck the AC had been removed. So tomorrow I'll post pix when I get it done.
-
Love what you did to your truck. I also like the center of the grill painted blue better. You are doing a great job.
-
Hey vile,
i just came across a gallon of unmixed dupont paint WRX blue and i purchased it, so there are now 2 trucks that will sport the blue.I was gonna go a porsche blue but i rather go with this color it gives the truck more pop.Well i thought i let you knowsomeone is in your shadow of colors now lol.... 8)
thanks

I can't blame you for a second! It's one of the nicest blue's I've ever seen in that shade. Show pix of your progress when you start painting stuff :D

That right there is my favorite truck of yours.. The color the stance the interior if you ever want to sell it let me no id treat her right ;)

yea that is it that is a nice truck good job
-
Veddy nice!
-
Great job Vile - Nice looking!! :)
How long did it take?
-
usualy i dont like blue, but you picked a good color. i realy like the phantom grill and the gray interior
-
Great job Vile - Nice looking!! :)
How long did it take?
I would say it took me 3 years total but I only worked on it here and there for a long time. It sat for months at a time untouched. I'm pretty happy with it. It needs a few details here and there but I use it. I load the bed up, drive it like a truck!
-
VileZambonie that looks unbeleiveable. im doing a frame off on mine too but only its white. are those american racing rims u got on it? do they still even make those?
-
I love that blue!!
-
Thanks! Yeah they are the aluminum slots. Yes I like those wheels maybe a bit too much lol. They don't make them in these sizes. They have a repro 15X7 and 17x7. That doens't help many of us any unfortunately that like these wheels.
-
holy crap, i want my truck to look just like yours. ;D i hope i can get it to that point sometime in my lifetime.
-
Yep another nice one. I like the interior very clean I think thats a good looking daily driver. I would like to have another one just to use daily mine just isn't practical to drive all the time and I just don't trust leaving it parked anywhere it's been keyed a few times by fans or jealous people I guess I would love to catch someone doing it though just once.
-
you do nice work
-
man nice truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what don't I like about it???????
I love the paint, the color and shine, love the seats and interior color, love the stereo setup, love the grille, love the headers, shoot love the truck man nice color, love that.
I'd like to paint our 84 or my monte carlo that color.
-
Thanks!
-
what is that seat out of??
-
It's not out of anything. It's a new seat.
-
Nice looking truck you got there. Love the color.
-
Dang bro, I knew you had some skill, but man o man!
Did you do the body and paint yourself? That is sick bro.
-
Thanks man. I did a lot of the body work and paint myself but a guy I was bartering with sprayed the exterior.
-
man, that is my favorite shade of blue. i might have to alter my plans and paint mine that blue with black racing stripes instead of silver with black racing stripes...
aaargh so many decisions! thanks for sharing that gorgeous truck man!
-
Just curious how did you get the interior metal painted?? I was thinking of thinning out some real quality urethane or something high gloss an do the inside by hand. But, I kind of like the same color inside and out idea. I gotta real bad crunch on the corner of the bed that I don't know what to do with. I gues I will get someone to cut it and weld it. It is pretty big to try to fill up.
-
I sanded the interior sheet metal, wiped it all down and sprayed on the base coat. then I put on 3 coats of clear
-
That's a hot one. It looks good on the outside and has some nice bling under the hood. Nice work.
-
Great looking truck all around!!! Where did you get that grille?
-
I actually bought that grille off another member here and I haven't seen him back on here in about 3 years or more. He bought it from AIM industries but it was in rough shape so I had to re-do the whole thing but I got it from him for cheap if I remember right. http://www.airbagit.com/product-p/bil-ch-9.htm has them I think but their website is one of those that the pix don't show the actual product so you have no idea what you are really buying. I've also heard a lot of customer complaints about this place so buy at your own risk (I am not endorsing them)
-
I saw another 85 with one posted on ebay not long ago. I think they look great! Is the insert removeable? I'd like to paint it to match the truck!
-
Yes it is but it's brushed aluminum
-
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL TRUCK!!!
Maybe I missed it somewhere but what is that color called?!?
That's one of the best looking interiors I've seen too! Surely those aren't factory seats? Are they? If not what are they out of?
-
It's not out of anything. It's a new seat.
They're new seats http://www.qualitex.com/seatstruckers.html
The paint is BC02 Subaru Blue
-
Great looking truck Vile. Your hard work looks like it paid off.

-
what color blue is that it looks great, I need to repaint mine and I like the color you went with

guy you really have a nice truck... great work there, are you running dana 44 or dana 60 front and 14 bolt 10 1/2 ring rear..?
-
If I had to guess I say 44 up front and 14 bolt ff out back
-
Thanks, it's one of my too many trucks now lol. And yes it's a K20 stock front and rear
-
Man that looks good VileZambonie! I like the grill and that color blue. Nice job!
-
Thanks
-
Love your truck, i have a 84 longbed 4x4 and need to do the interior first where did you buy the headliner from i like it alot and did you use for most of the build.
-
Thanks, I recovered the headliner myself. I was resourceful with the parts
-
sharp truck, I really like those rims, never seen them in 8-bolt before.
-
Decided I'd put this in here too from this thread http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=33845.msg288456#msg288456
I put LED's in my K20 for a few reasons. One being that I put a relay harness in and there was no difference. The voltage drop was less than .2V difference at best and two being that this truck has a phantom grille. I drive this truck very rarely at night but when I do it's awful because of the lighting. Since the grille does impact the lighting I decided to go with LED. I would never run LED's in a daily driver though, they are way too bright to oncoming vehicles. I'll post a few before and after pics. I replaced them on a dark rainy night to really see the difference. Pictures are as is, no filter.

COOOOLLL!! No pun intended. New snow is so pristine and hush. Makes that purdy blue truck really stand out. 8)
-
The snow is beautiful when it's fresh but for me it's such a nuisance. It takes me 3+ hours every time it snows to properly clean up my property. In my next life i am going to install heated floors in the house, garage, driveways, walkways, decks, gutters, and stairs. I will also have the perfect pitch so all of the run off from the melted snow drains into a heated pond where I can float around drinking a beer watching the snow melt. 8)
-
Substitute white sand for the snow and you've described Cabo San Lucas.

Good Point.... 8)

In my next life I want this truck.
I can get along just fine without the heated floors, walkways, and driveways.

I can too but I'm a dreamer ;D

Gave this baby some love and attention as it sat for a while. The tires although good tread were dry rotting pretty bad so she got some new rubbers. Very happy they made this batch of radials so I could keep my old school wheels. I also rebuilt the transfer case, replaced the steering box with a reman unit, new power steering hoses, Moog drag link, new rotors and serviced the hub/bearings, new calipers & brakes. The alternator bracket broke so I tigged it back together but found one on eBay, so I replaced that as well (serpentine setup). Changed the oil because it had been two years and had about 100 miles on it :o I also put the plow on since my driveway is massive and too labor intensive to do with my ATV and snowblowers alone. In fact I need to go out soon and clean up the slush bomb mess we got here last night.

Nice truck! I am also a fan of the slots. I always paint a black w/ silver metalic color in the slots for the contrast. I have also used the "Spray Grey" fresh cast iron detail paint from Eastwood for similar contrast. I put on new rubber also, Super Swamper 33x12.50-16.5LT Tire, TrXus MT Radial - RXM-08R. They work real well on hillsides around the farm and are suprisingly quiet over the road.

More about the aluminum slots, I never let anyone near them with an impact wrench & always use a torque wrench to mount the wheels. Another thing about these wheels I've found is the possibility of corrosion creep from the lug washer recess that will make a mess under any clear protection the wheel may have. Made this tool years back to clean up the spotface. Caution don't remove so much material that the nut shank bottoms against the hub before clamping the wheel securely.

that truck is to nice to be in the snow , very nice sir !!

Get torque sticks. Once you start them all by hand, there's no overtightening with the 65lb stick. Then use the torque wrench to finish it off. Neat tool, I use the scotch bright stud cleaning adapter. The truck did a nice job clearing this last icy mess and saved me a lot of time!

Hi, looking for a nice blue for two toned, blue/silver for my 1980 k20 4x4. Your truck looks great!
Do you have exact color and who's paint?
Thanks,
Mark

I've been bad about updating. This truck got some TLC again with new U-joints, replaced the Gov bomb with a new LSD, installed the dakota digital gauges, replaced the rear leaf springs and shackles, changed all of the fluids, serviced the brakes and slapped the plow back on it. Luckily I've only had to plow once this season.
