"Cavemanning" iron intake to fit 87 up heads
« on: December 14, 2007, 03:15:08 PM »
Got a co-worker who wants to use his iron intake on his 87-up heads with the 78 degree center intake bolts, he would like to know if it is at all possible to use a torch to enlarge the holes.  I had no answer for him.  I think he will end up using a die grinder, but he has me curious now, so, is it possible?

yes it's easy. Just use a carbide burr in a diegrinder and enlarge the 4 center holes. Why does he want to use an old iron boat anchor anyway?

It's all he has at the moment.  He ended up being too scared so I put a set of 87 up heads on a block that was in the back of my truck and stood out there for about 45 minutes with a 18 volt cordless drill, a dremel with a stone cylinder thing on it and a 3/8, 7/16, and 1/2" drill bit and made it work.  Then used the dremel to fine tune it to bolt up nice.  That was easier than my Dominator II aluminum intake I did this spring.

JUST DID THE SAME THANG BUT NEW TO OLD YOU NEED MAKE 4 WASHERS THAT WILL SIT FLAT ON INTAKE A GRIND ONE SIDE DOWN TO GET YOUR ANGLE I JUST 1/4 THICK AND GROUND DOWN MY ANGLE. IF NOT ONLY 1/4 OF THE HEAD WILL TOUCH AND WILL NOT ALOWE TO PULL DOWN EKUAL PRESURE WITH YOUR TORK 75% CHANCE IT WILL LEAK IF NOT. MINE DID I HADE TO DO MINE TWICE AND I TORK THEM TEN POUNDS MORE THEN IT CALLED AND IT LEAKED DONT MAKE MY MISTAKE.

Well... thanks for the advise.  I cheated and ordered intake bushings from professional products like their intakes use to interchange designs.  Works nice.
