Fuel gauge off by 1/4 turn?
« on: May 05, 2014, 06:35:30 AM »
I finally got my fuel gauge working by putting a new sending unit in yesterday. Now here's the weird problem -  my guage works side to side, right to left but my needle seems to be working up and down.

IE:

E ...... .... ..... F

E
.
.
.

F

When it's full the needle is right under the E, but when it's empty the needle is all the way down by the word 'unleaded' at the bottom of the gauge window.

can a gauge be turned to get it reader correctly again? or what are my options here? anyone seen this before?

Here is a write up by bd on testing factory gauges.  The read is very informative at least if it does not solve your problem.
I am a little confused with your post, I understand the side to side part, if your gauge is a side to side read, how does your needle work up and down ?  Are you sure when you put the sending unit in it is clear and not obstructed by anything ?

#1: The easiest and most obvious solution to any problem is 99% of the time correct.
#2: There is no such thing as impossible, it just takes longer.

yeah, nothing obstructing it, it's moving freelly, it's just like the needle mechanism needs to be turned 1/4 turn clockwise

You do have the resistor that goes across the fuel gauge leads on the back, right?

I haven't taken the gauge out of the instrument cluster but all that's on the back of the cluster is the wire ribbon.

the front and back of my cluster look like the pics in this listing(this listing is NOT my personal cluster though, it's just for reference)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/81-82-83-84-85-86-87-88-chevy-gmc-truck-blazer-suburban-instrument-cluster-/121330068470#ht_25wt_1312

and while you're looking at it, does anyone know what that wire in the top corner above the fuel gauge is for?(looking at backview picture, it's on the top left of the cluster)

Sounds like the gauge is off adjustment and probably needs to be replaced but I don't know that I am following you..

The "wire" at the top right is probably the fiber optic cable to the glove box.

so there's no way to adjust it then?
