Title: A New Mystery....Engine I.D.

The olio which I own, a 1984 C10 Scottsdale continues to throw me curves.

The latest is the engine I.D.
I do know that it is a 305.
When I went to install the flywheel I discovered that my engine, or at least the short block, is a 1pc. rear main seal unit.
However, the rocker covers are bolted along the perimeter rather than down the center.
The engine s/n does not follow the standard format: 1 letter, 4 numbers then 3 letters.
Mine is 1 letter then 7 numbers.
Specifically" K0190560

This doesn't appear to adhere to the crate motor serialization either.
I do not have casting numbers at this time.

Where can I find out anything on this critter??

Look at the casting number near the bellhousing on the top of the engine.

I climbed up into the engine compartment under the hood and did my level best to get a look at the casting #
behind the driver's side head.
 
Not gonna happen..............

It does have "305" cast into the side of the block near the front on the driver's side.

i find it easiest to clean as much grime off as i can then take a soap stone or chalk and rub the casting numbers. then take a phone and take a picture

So I charged up my Galaxy S smartphone so as to follow your suggestion, only to find that this phone has NO flash!!

Back to the drawing board.........

Spray some solvent back there and try to get to it with a long handled brush like those engine cleaning brushes...then repeat...a day later position a shop light to shine down there and then climb on the engine with a mirror and you should be able to get the number.

Knowing that the engine is a 305 (cast onto the side of the block) and a 1 piece rear main seal,
is there any knowledge to be gained from the casting # ??

casting numbers mean what it was sent out of the factory as, the stamped numbers would tell you what the engine is or was modified as

Thanks, but been there.....no pertinent info.
I've seen several I.D. requests for engines with a S/N of similar format, and no info on any of them.

The number I gave is stamped onto the pad just in front of the passenger side head.
It seems unlikely that the cast date is 1979 as the engine has a 1 piece rear main seal.
I have not been able to get the casting # from behind the driver's side head, but,
as the block has "305" cast on it on the driver's side in front of the motor mount and it
has the 1 piece rear main seal, the basics should be pretty obvious.
The casting # may indicate if the block is configured for a roller cam, but, as I do not plan
on doing anything to this motor performance-wise, that is moot.

As the heads are period correct for my 1984, I can only conclude that the short block was replaced at some time after the
1 piece rear main became the norm.

I have seen several posts on this and the mortec forum giving a 1 letter 7 digit stamped S/N,
but virtually no information given in replies.

If heads are original to the engine, that really narrows things.
Mine does have a mechanical pump.
Interesting note: when I purchased the truck there was an oil leak which I traced to the tapped
hole on the front (originally a motor mount hole 1955-57.)
This hole is in line with the fuel pump rod and can be used to hold the rod in place during fuel pump replacement by threading a bolt into the block and contacting the rod.
This hole may have bee unplugged (hence leaking) since the motor was installed.
