buying doors
« on: July 20, 2011, 01:56:15 PM »
I'm on the hunt for doors off of craigslist, Preferably power window/power locks. So, What should I get when I find a pair? Just the doors and internals, or do I need wiring from the truck? And, what would be a reasonable price for 2 matching doors in Arizona?

If your truck doesnt have power now, then you need everything, including the wires.

That doesnt answer my question much, are you saying I have to rip the entire vehicles wiring harness out of it and rewire my whole truck? Or is there a seperate circuit for the doors somewhere under the dash?

It's all plug and play. The harness for each door and the one that has the relays in it will all come right out and should be able to be just plugged into your trucks harness.

Wiring for the windows and locks are on a seperate harness.  follow it out of the doors and to the firewall.  Just remove all of it.  The power comes from ta junction on the fuse panel.

Okay thanks guys, I should be able to find what I need now. Now, anyone know what sort of prices these shold run me? Some dude told me 100 per door, someone wanted 80 per, that seems risiculously high when pickapart charges 70, and ive seen some on clist for 50.

The prices are all over the map.  I got lucky and got two almost perfect doors for $50 each.  That might happen again for you it might not.  If you find rust free doors for a good price I'd buy them.  Don't worry about whether they are power or not.  You can always find the harness, relays, regulators, and door panels later.  That stuff is pretty easy to find but the doors are usually damaged or rusted and the window switch connectors have been cut off almost every truck's harness I've found in yards.  I had to get one of my window switch connectors off a van 'cause I couldn't find one still on a 73-87.

See? all of it  ;D I would try to pull the harness yourself so you can see how it was ran when you put it in your truck.

Alright! I just bought a pair of door shells. The guy wanted 40 bucks each obo. I texted him and he said if I bought them tonight hed give me a great deal because he needs them gone. Picked up the pair for 50 bucks. They are Cobra King after market doors, ive never heard of the brand, but they cant be too bad for 50 bucks. Im searching for power window regulators and power door lock actuators and harness for them now.

Okay, a new issue has risen. I plan on giving my brother my old doors for his 77. He wants to use his door skins on my inner shell, because my skins are dented up. But, how do you remove the skin from the door?

Find every spot weld and use a spot weld drill.  Don't go all the way through, just enough that you can put a screwdriver or something between the two and a quick pry should pop them apart.  A new skin would be much less work than trying to reuse an old one, but its possible.
