V30 Death Wobble
« on: April 06, 2012, 01:30:58 PM »
My 88 V30 dually 454, Dana 60 up front, has death wobble. It had originally occurred last year then I replaced the shocks and steering damper. This helped but did not cure it. Since then Ive replaced the worn out spring packs front and back which definitely changed the suspension characteristics, ride height, and steering but, as I found out the other day, has not fixed the DW.

I know I need to replace the steering U-joints and I know there seems to be a little extra slop in the steering gear which may contribute. The drag link, pitman arm, and connecting/tie-rods appear to be in good shape though along with wheel bearings.

My question is if there is a method for checking the kingpin as there is for checking ball joints. Is this most likely the problem? Do I need to pull the cover the check the king pins? Thanks in advance

Thanks Vile, I'm gonna do a more in depth check of the steering system and front frame section.
Hey I just spent an hour looking through your 1974 GMC C1500 thread and dang that's some nice work. You have a mean looking truck and a clean shop. Thanks for the help and inspiration, cheers!
