Ford 9" Question
« on: March 16, 2006, 02:15:00 PM »
Hello, I am new to the forum and I must say.. There is a ton of information here, Thank you!  Anyway I just bought a 87 short wide Silverado 2wd.  I am wondering from what year ford/mercury would be the best to rob a 9" rear axle from to convert this thing to disk brake?  If there is another post regarding this... Im sorry i missed.  Links or reply's are ok with me =) Thank you.

I belive there is a kit available after market to do this. Not sure what would be the best FoMoCo rearend, but I would think something from a large lincoln would be the best as the are heavy like a truck. Welcome to the board from N.H.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I used the rearend from an early 60's ford truck,as they are 3" narrower than our truck rearends, and I wanted to be able to tuck 10" wheels and 325/50 drag radials..then I used the disc brakes from the big Lincoln MK V,it uses  caliper brackets that bolt onto the 4 bolt flange instead of the weld on brackets that the Versailles rearend uses, and they are easier to get than the others..

IF you can find one.  1977-1980 Lincoln Versailles already have disc on them that is a VERY popular swap.

Also 80s Cadillac Seville/Olds Toronado have discs on them and have the same bolt pattern.

I forgot that part Chris, the MK V has the 5x5 pattern also.. but those axles would have to cut to fit in the truck housing, the car rear is ALOT wider than the early truck housing..I avoided that by ordering Moser's for mine:lol

Chris,
i got a 79 lincoln versailles rearend and was wondering, how does the ebrake cables hook up to the factory ebrakes on our trucks?I thought i had this rearend sold but it seems the guy backed out due to the distance and it not being a posi. Also the truck right now has a 12 bolt 3.73 rearend and in your honest opinon would you leave the 12 bolt or op for the 9 inch disc rearend?

thanks
pat
